Anemones in the morning… by atchoo

Anemones in the morning…

Another shot of the anemones in the forest surrounding the office building where I work… I took this shot early in the morning when the anemones had not fully opened their petals…
Anemones are among those species of flowers that close their petals when the sun goes down - it's almost like a night time hibernation.
There are several theories behind why some flowers close up during the night - one theory says that the plants close up at night to reduce their risk of freezing. Another theory says that the plants are conserving energy for the daytime, when pollinating insects are more active and a third theory says that this is a way for the plant to prevent the pollen from becoming wet and heavy with dew... Whatever the reason is I think it's quite fascinating when flowers behave this way... and for me it's a reminder of the fact that plants are indeed living creatures as well.
