'as one person I cannot change the world, but I can change the world of one person.'-ps spear

did you know that $10 can change a life? i have a friend who developed a straw that filters water to make unclean water potable, and i have another friend who is going to kenya in 10 days to deliver as many straws as she can to children so they can have clean drinking water. each straw costs $10. my husband and i were already planning to donate, but i also asked both my boys to pray about what God would want them to give from their money.

'tell them to use their money to do good. they should be rich in good works and should give generously to those in need, always being ready to share with others whatever God has given them. by doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may take hold of real life.' (I timothy 6:18-19)

my older son told me this morning he was going to give $70, which for a 15 year old is quite a lot! i told him, 'that's great! that is SEVEN kids who can be helped!' he got really quiet and pensive. later this afternoon, he came to me with a fistful of money. it was almost his entire savings. i said, 'buddy, this is way more than i thought you were going to give!' he just quietly responded, 'i don't need it.' and i knew that it wasn't just about giving money anymore--he was counting how many CHILDREN he could help.
my youngest brought me a crumpled ten-dollar bill, and i asked him if he knew what that money could do. he replied, 'maybe save a child's life'.
i love that they really understand they can make an impact in someone's life when they use what God has blessed them with to bless others. while the amounts were different, both boys gave generously and from their hearts. i can't wait to one day see what eternal difference their sacrifices made for the children they will help.

'and if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, i tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward.' (matthew 10:42)

Well, they have learned a valuable lesson, and I am sure they will grow to continue with the same spirit of compassion.
