tour of lawrence (downtown)

today's men's cat4 crit was in the beautiful downtown area of lawrence, kansas. it was a very fast-moving race, and in this shot you can also get a bit of an idea of how big the field and how tightly packed the peloton was. my boy (above in his RAD racing kit and neon shades) was with the front of the lead group the whole race--up until the last lap. another rider swerved in front of him, and when he also swerved to avoid a collision his wheel bumped another rider's spokes. they somehow stayed upright, but his wheel skewer was bent and causing his brake to rub against his wheel. he managed to finish the race, but well out of contention. he was so happy with the way he rode and his positioning going into the finish, so it was disappointing the way it ended. we had a big talk on the way home about how God must be trying to teach him something, after two races where he had done everything right and put himself in position to finish really well, yet things beyond his control caused a different outcome than what he had hoped. really proud of not just how well he rode this weekend, but also how he maintained a good attitude and handled disappointment.
