it rained our first day in bar harbor, but that didn't keep us from stopping at a road-side stand to gobble up a pint of freshly picked maine blueberries. even though we didn't pick these ourselves--or see a bear!--i still felt a teensy bit like robert mccloskey's sal. :)
maine is the top producer of lowbush (or 'wild') blueberries in north america. they are smaller--about the size of a pencil eraser--than highbush (or cultivated) blueberries, and they grow everywhere here!
