I have a 70-200 f/2.8 zoom with a 2x converter that has never really thrilled me. I realised I needed to calibrate it to my camera. It was off by a whopping 8 points... however much that is, is anyone's guess but it was huge. So I have been running around taking photos of all sorts of things... the butterfly was one of them. I figure the focus doesn't look too bad for 400mm (with the crop factor, that's 600mm).
Gorgeous! Really needs to be seen enlarged! Do you like the converter? I've been thinking of getting one for my 100-400mm lens. Now that I'm using a full frame camera, I'd like a little more reach.
@timandelke I'm still deciding Elke, if I could get the focus as good as the 70-200 I would absolutely love it. I'm still fiddling with the calibration and trying to perfect it. I think if I was you I would take my lens and camera into a store and do some test photos with the converter on and off and see what you think. That's never an option for me, a store close-by would not stock the items. Perhaps you could even rent one for a weekend and give it a workout? The converter wasn't cheap. I think if I ever go to full frame the extra reach would be the thing that I would miss the most too.
Love this shot, Sheralee---so dainty and perfectly composed. I don't really understand a lot of camera settings. Mine says 28-840mm. I have no idea what that means.....duh! Anyway this is a fav!
@rhoing Thom I wish I had time to magnify every shot I look at because the quality of the pic we see is so much better. The pic on this page must be lower resolution. Thanks for taking the time to use the magnifier :)
I have no idea how I would calibrate my camera or how to do it! Or even what difference it would make tbh. Any tips? Whatever you did and whether it was necessary or not this is a beautiful shot. Fantastic clarity and lovely composition xx
@psychographer Lisa, your camera (or lens) probably doesn't need it. I noticed when I focused that the focus was always off. It is a setting that I can change in my camera for each lens that I use. This is the only lens that I have had to do it for though. It was so bad that I just didn't bother using the lens but I used it for my latest photo "Old Man" and the focus looks really good on that one. Thanks for your lovely comments xx
Hi Paula, did you have any trouble with the calibration of your lens at all? At least I am happy with it now but as for the converter, I don't think for the money that it is worth it. I think I can use the 70-200 and crop with better results than using the converter. Also bare in mind using the converter cuts the maximum aperture down to f/5.6. I probably need to test it out more than I have. I also suggested to Elke above that perhaps you could try one at your camera store, i.e. shoot some pics off with the converter on and check them out at home.
