These red pillars formed part of a railway bridge across the Thames at Blackfriars. The bridge was removed in 1985 but the supports were left. There was a third pillar in each row which was absorbed into supporting the newly rebuilt bridge.
In the distance can be seen the dome of St Paul's Cathedral.
