Thames Barrier by billyboy

Thames Barrier

This is the Thames Barrier which was first operational in 1982. It is designed to prevent London from being flooded during exceptional high tide. The barrier gates normally lie on the riverbed and are then raised during a high tide. One of the gates can be seen raised at the fifth gap from the left.
