We always called a spring snow “poor man’s fertilizer”, and now with Google, I know why!
“Poor man's fertilizer” is what the old Yankees called spring snow and there is considerable truth to that expression. Snowflakes as they form and fall absorb nitrates from the atmosphere and then release these nutrients into the soil as the snow melts.
Three good things:
1. We got about an inch and it is already melted
2. My daffodils bent a bit under the weight of the snow but are perking up again already
3. Am hoping these lilac buds are okay!
I learned something new. I'd never heard spring snow called 'poor man's fertilizer', nor would I have known why. Then again, I've never seen snow in mid-April.
