My oldest’s birthday was Election Day. We knew the election would be very stressful for our family, as for most LGBT+ families, so we turned our phones off and took our kids to see Suffs- which was a wonderful, affirming musical. This is Shaina Taub, who WROTE it AND starred as Alice Paul, taking her final bow that night.
I’m trying to be as positive as I can for the kids while I sort through my emotions, so I’m going to just leave this post with lyrics from the final song, which I have been playing to try and cheer myself on.
“The gains will feel small and the losses too large
Keep marching, keep marching,
You’ll rarely agree with whoever’s in charge
Keep marching, keep marching
‘Cause your ancestors are all the proof that you need
That progress is possible, not guaranteed.
It will only be made if we keep marching, keep marching on”
I’m wearing another black shirt today, and I read a discouraging opinion piece in the NYT this morning, but I will regain my hope for my daughters’ sakes … and my granddaughters’ sakes, if slowly.
