Tell me: How can anyone feel cozy or comfortable in a harsh blanket like this?
I would rather use it as throw rug.

you are so correct, they are not cuddly at all but they are warm. i think they do get used for about everything, too, blankets, jackets, ponchos, saddle blankets - so maybe rugs? either way, this is a great shot that you have!
