Jan 28: Near You

So, it was early when I left High Wycombe and as I have just moved job to Hemel Hempstead, I was sure there would be a Public Attraction there. Well there is, it's a Ski Slope.. That's it....
After a great deal of research, I finally found the other other attraction to Hemel, Frogmore Mill.

Frogmore Mill has a long history, with a water mill first recorded on the site in the thirteenth century. As one of the mills in the Bulbourne and Gade valleys, Frogmore is bound up with the history of both the canal and paper-making.

Frogmore Mill, once called Covent Mill, was in use for paper-making in 1774 when Edward Holmes was the occupier. He leased it from Thomas Tower for £100 per annum and he was allowed to remove the flour milling equipment to make way for hand paper-making. The Fourdrinier brothers took over the nearby Two Waters Mill in 1792, when it was described as "a house, water corn mill and paper mill".

So there you go....

I would also like to thank Sean O'Neill for his help and guidance with this post. "It's generally best to have a long story as cover for crap shots!!

Thanks Sean

Interesting story about a not very pretty building. I'm sure it looks better when the tree is full of lovely pink blossom

@rosiekind - Yeah, sorry about that - I was a little uninspired today :|

@gphelps5 Well you do spend a lot of energy on providing us with such entertaining pics that you deserve a day off from such creativity. We do appreciate your pics so don't let today's comments put you off!
January 28th, 2013
@gphelps5 Yes, that's why I found it funny :)
January 28th, 2013
So that's the secret--I need to do more writing for my crappy shots, eh ; )
BTW, I don't think you're shot is at all crappy. I agree with Hazel--would be quite a different shot if the tree had blossoms.

@aromatic - Thanks Jane
@rosiekind - Hey, don't worry, life is too short to not enjoy everything you do.

There is a pub just down the Canal called the Paper Mill. Should I go there tomorrow Fanny?

Unfortunately, my local pub closed down a couple of years ago.

I see a not-crap shot with trees and canal boats and nice reflections and sunshine but where's the mill?! Or should I ask 'which bit' is the mill?! :)
January 28th, 2013
The mill is just behind the Visitor Centre that looks like an old bike shed. @filsie65

This looks like a house boat to me. Am I missing something? Oh, I probably am. Where are my glasses?
January 29th, 2013
lmao!! Good cover story for your photo! Just for the record I enjoyed the bit of education, since I am not very familiar with your part of the world.
January 29th, 2013
Good write up and I like the red colors in the photo. Makes the winter shot very appealing.
January 29th, 2013
I really like the light and the leading lines in this.
January 29th, 2013
You should make this into one of those series of the same place at different times just to irritate all those who were sniffy ... LOL anyway, 'interesting facts' apart, I loved the boats and they have damned good reflections!
January 29th, 2013
Did you see this thread I started this morning, there are some great ones in there.

@tishpics
January 29th, 2013
With an interesting history, you would have hoped that there was a more interesting building. How rubbish and disappointing :/
January 30th, 2013
@gphelps5 Yes, was thinking of that! Am going to do it with my sunrise pics.
