May 23: Monochrome by bulldog

May 23: Monochrome

Definition of monochrome (noun): A photograph or picture developed or executed in black and white or in varying tones of only one colour.

So, off I went early this morning to capture the wild Zebras of Hemel Hempstead.
Unfortunately, after finding somewhere to park the car and hiking off to a suitable field, I found that the memory card was still at home (hence the phone shot).

All was not lost, lucky for me I found a herd of Humbug Cows for the Black & White and the 'Great British Summer' provided the 'varying tones of only one colour'.
PS. Don't bother viewing in bigness, it's still a phone shot and a bit rubbish.

I had to view large because you said not to! actually the bright greens are really vivid which sets of the b&w of the cows! cool shot :)

And that was out of the camera, the sun was very bright just above me...

Such a lovely monochrome image. You are funny. It really is a nice scene and you did well with your camera phone!
May 23rd, 2013
Hhaha, I read the definition and was just saying to myself, is he colour blind or maybe he did not see the cows ?? as I thought you were going for a complete green shot.

Wow you've found some Belted Galloways! My Dad used to keep us quiet on long journeys by promising a prize to the first one to see one. Not many of them about in those days. You've made my day. :-)
May 23rd, 2013
It's a great shot for a phone. I can't fault your logic about what constitutes a monochrome image. I learn so much here on 365 and that's a new one on me.
May 23rd, 2013
I agree it is a lovely clear shot for a phone and a super scene!
May 23rd, 2013
I would have never known this was a phone . I think it's cowlish ... what interesting looks cows. Thanks for explaining monochrome but this picture confuses me it that respect. Love the little yellow in the grass ... forgot the memory card , been there done what...
May 23rd, 2013
You are right Dandolo, the are 'Belted Galloways', there is a well know herd in Hemel, Hertfordshire and I have to say, I love the look of them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belted_Galloway

Very clever shot for today's theme. You did well. I love these cows. The first time I saw a herd of these, I thought I was hallucinating.
May 23rd, 2013
@bulldog Its a lovely shot btw, the English zebras are lovely ( or are they rather cobras or zews).Taste shouldn't be hard for you, and for Sa you need a Van Halen shot maybe http://365project.org/khirsch/bits-and-pieces/2013-05-06
May 23rd, 2013
Almost a monochrome greyscale and B&W in one shot if you had edited out the buildings , road, van and yellow flowers!
May 23rd, 2013
You forgot the train...

Jo
Its not rubbish at all and yes, I looked at it enlarged for the same reason others did (I use to touch things after my mother told me not to) - its really lovely and I do love that green with the black cows. great shot.
May 23rd, 2013
Beautiful shot.
May 24th, 2013
Beautiful shot. When viewed larger, I can see the various shades of green better.
May 24th, 2013
I love it, iPhone or SLR, monochrome or not, it's a lovely British landscape,

Ha ha ha... thanks

I think the yellow buttercups blend into the green quite well and the van appears in the grey scale but the roof of the train.....nevertheless it's a great photo, monochrome or not.
May 24th, 2013
I think each aspect meets the criteria individually and I love a shot that comes in 'the back way" instead of being literal and rigid in it's definition - all that was required was "OR b&w" and the cows are definitely b&w -doesn't mean everything else has to be b&w or greyscale/monochrome! so a cool way to meet the challenge - and it's lovely overall!
May 24th, 2013
I'm confused! but i like the shot its cleverly thought out. The monochrome cows stand out well against the buttercups and green!
May 24th, 2013
Bulldog, I KNOW these very cows and love them! We see them every time we go along that road to Aylesbury en route to Oxford to visit my son! Humbug cows! That is what they will be called from now on! Fav!
May 24th, 2013
so glad you had your phone! For a phone shot it is very nice! Been looking at new phones, Galaxy X4 it
has 13 megapixels!! that is more than my nikon. and it can take two pictures at 1 time!

May 24th, 2013
Don't let anyone fool you - these are really Saddleback cows, not Belted Galloway pigs at all ;-)
Cool capture.
May 24th, 2013
No. They are humbug cows.
@dulciknit
May 24th, 2013
I heard a story that when the cows are laying down, it means rain is on the way.... some of these cows are still standing, its an each way bet.

you got a new follower by the way.

Thanks for all your great comments Jason and for the follow.

@bulldog - welcome.
May 24th, 2013
Interesting take on monochrome.
May 25th, 2013
quite nice animals when zebras aren't available! and the sky too, seemed to cooperate in monochrome! @bobfoto never heard that jason, but now i am going to pay attention!
May 26th, 2013
@moreyoulessme - A British chap once believed it and we kinda thought about it often when viewing cows in a paddock. Not sure if it is feasible though.
