This is not the subject I was looking for today! If you've been following me for awhile, you know that snakes are not my friends. I've gotten better, since starting the 365. I didn't hesitate to snap pics of this Garter Snake. I've never seen one sticking up out of the grass like this before. It was small, I think. I never could see all of it.
I bragged to my Mom that my heart rate stayed normal, while I was taking the snake pics. Bragging is not a good thing. Thirty minutes later, a Black Racer came slithering out of a thicket near my feet and I screamed and ran like the wind!!! LOL! I was done for the day! One step forward and one step back.
Thank you for your comments and faves on yesterday's pics!!! :0)
He had to go up periscope for a good look around. Great capture, I'm sure you can overcome your fear with a little effort. Your hand was steady for this shot.
Excellent shot. I LOL at your screaming after the fact. I love snakes. I have been very close to some really neat looking snakes and some ones that I'd just as soon not be that close. First encounter with a rattlesnake, it was HOLY CRAP only I used the S word instead. Last encounter, I actually wanted it to come out so I could get a good photo of it. It didn't and I didn't push my luck either. Proud of you for taking a shot of something that you don't enjoy. Just keep in mind, they are way more afraid of you than you are of them.
Well done, Carolyn, fabulous shot. And I note, after Googling, that they are non-venomous so nothing to fear from this one. Still, it's best to practise on the non-poisonous ones I guess. Not many in that category here, I'm afraid, so I just take my chances when stomping through long grass.
I don't scare easily ... have gone mighty close to pit-bulls who are angry. But, I think that this would freak me out. Beautiful capture tho and bravo for your bravery!!
@robv Love that comment! These guys are very friendly, but one sneaking up on you can even scare me. I had to remove one from my office one day. Just picked him up and moved him outside. He bit, but it didn't hurt. All was well, the screaming lady finally calmed down.
@bardejov Thanks! I will try to get pics. We have a pretty green snake that lives here. They hang out in trees and bushes. I've been afraid of snakes my whole life. I know it's silly, but I can't help it.
you made me laugh, I am sometimes startled by snakes but not scared. I took a picture of my daughter when she was young with a garter snake wrapped around her 2 wrists like handcuffs but I've never seen them standing up like this - great find!!
I think you're very brave to photograph the first snake! Just looking at your pic makes me shiver. We hardly ever see a snake in the UK but my daughter's dog died from an adder bite and I am terrified of them!
Fantastic capture! Good story. Black racers get to me too. When I was a child, I was the designated person to get the black racers out of the chicken yard before they killed the chickens by scaring them to death (chickens run too when they see black racers).
