It's strange saying goodbye to someone you have only ever spoken to, never met. I have known his wife, however for 30 years or more, and I went to the funeral to support her.
I met a member of his extended family who I haven't seen since we left school, 35 years ago...
Fred was spoken about with great affection, and there was joy in the faces of the congregation, despite the tears. This was a funeral of a man who had lived a long and generous life, and there was an air of quiet contentment.
Rest in peace, Fred, and thank you for all the love you shared.
