Since the early railway system was built in the city, citizens were frustrated because they had to wait for the train in order to access the Northern and Southern part of the city. Emergency crews fear the time they will not be able to respond quick enough to an emergency if the train happens to be running at the time their assistance is needed. Well, now a huge project is under way. They have decided to demolish two blocks of dwellings on both the major Northern route and the Southern route in order to construct a roadway that will allow passage over the railraod tracks. It will be great being able to continue on your way in spite of the train traveling through our city, but it is also quite discouraging knowing that so many homes are going to be destroyed in the process. The only positive thing about the huge project is that some of these homes were pretty run down, primarily due to the Slum Lords in this area. They didn't care about the home's upkeep. All they wanted was the rent money, and of course, the structures demonstrated their greed. Progress means change.
What a shame that whole blocks of houses get run down and then get demolished -- so much struggle and heartache has probably occurred in these rowhouses down thru the years. Its interesting that some of the fronts of the rowhouses look semi-OK in this pic but we know that the inside is horrible.
It is always interesting seeing this slice of life... the purple room, the blue room, the green room which was painted around large bookshelves... all this different tastes under the same roof... nice eye
wonderful shot Rick!!! I think this fits the theme so perfectly! so awesome job! :D
it's too bad that they are being destroyed and to think of all the memories they hold.
I'm glad you were able to capture this though! :D
Such an interesting back story. I like the cloudy sky to enhance the mood of decay and destruction. It's sad to think that when these buildings were first constructed there were many hopes and dreams invested in them.
nice story rick. if that money will benefit for good sake purpose, then why not. great shot rick! love the colors on the houses. too bad preservation did not last long.
Very interesting, I bet these row houses were pretty when they were first built! Atleast the city will be safer now. I used to live near a train station in VA so I know how frustrating it is to wait for the train when you need to be somewhere. I also feared that there would be an emergency when the trains were coming through. Its sad that these will be torn down, but I am sure it will be for the good of everyone.
The Europeans chuckle at us when we talk about "old"... and what we have that's old is so often removed, though I understand it's lack of care has turned it into a blite. So sad, as we'll never see this lovely old architecture again. Your picture really captured the theme well, but I realize it's a theme that's somewhat depressing to me.
The cloudy sky makes this all the more sad-feeling to me. I wonder about the people who live there. Where will they go? It is a perfect shot for the theme, as sad as it is.
Great photo for the theme! I agree that it's both a good thing and a bad thing. We have so much great architecture in the city of Detroit and some of it is scheduled for demolition. Our wonderful Tiger Stadium was just flattened not long ago. I wish they would have just kept it and made something else out of it. That was a great piece of history!
Thanks for laughing with me not at me,lol.
