Touching History

I love history, and especially when it comes to my family. I was in the basement tonight, just messing around, and I happened to lean against this support post. As I leaned against the post I took special notice to all the scratch marks, the gouges, nail holes, etc. Since our house has been in my family for approxiamtely 80 years, I began wondering how many of these marks were made either by my Father, my Grandfather or my Great Grandfather. It may sound weird, but by just touching the post, I felt a connection to my direct lineage. Kind of comforting knowing that it is still in the family. If everything works out the way we plan, we will pass it on to one of our Children. I think it's kind of cool.
I really like your stories. This is such a great sentiment.

Touching idea...
February 22nd, 2011
that is very cool! We have a farm house that has been in our family for well over 100 years now and I hope to get some good shots of it this spring and summer! :)
February 22nd, 2011
Very nice. It gave me a chill to think that all those family members have lived there. How special!
February 22nd, 2011
Wow living in the family house. What memories you must have. Great shot of the history of your home.
February 22nd, 2011
I love the picture, and I have to say I completely agree with you about touching something and feeling the connection. I love history and feel that way not just with my own family’s things, but when I visit historic sites. It was really cool to stand in Mt. Vernon knowing George Washington walked the same hallways.

Beautiful story to go along with this moody shot, rick.... you always know how to tell stories, just right.... am hooked each and every time....
February 22nd, 2011

Love the story to go along with this shot! Great b&w!
February 22nd, 2011
oh, I think it is more than cool! It is fascinating! 80 years! That is amazing! We have our family to thank for who we are. They structured our lives, as infents, as young children, and as we matured and aged. Without them, where would we be? Love that your family still provides a place to lean on them, if you ever need to! Great find, and I love the way the shot turned out!
February 22nd, 2011
How beautiful that you have that connection with your family... I f I had of known what would happen when we sold our dads.. I would have bought it myself.. anyway life goes on .

You are a lucky man .. :)
February 22nd, 2011
Amazing connection...and photo to go along with it. Wow!
February 22nd, 2011
Lovely thoughts Rick. Beautiful!
February 22nd, 2011
Great picture to symbolize your thoughts. I know just what you mean. Can you imagine living in England in one of those Great Houses passed down through families for generations? It boggles the mind.
February 22nd, 2011
Very cool
February 22nd, 2011
This is a real moody shot, love the b&w
February 22nd, 2011
This is so neat! What a wonderful thing to have a home in your family for so long. I have to admit this looks like a difficult self portrait of your hand. Great job!
February 22nd, 2011
Really touching story/photo. Not too many homes get passed down these days. There has to be some comfort in knowing that is was your family. What stories the walls would tell.
February 22nd, 2011
Great shot for your story...
February 22nd, 2011
Your family tree has strong roots and the generations to come will be blessed!
February 22nd, 2011
That is very cool... and I can completely understand. A few years back they finally sold my dad's family home. It was really sad. I will always remember running down the stairs to get breakfast only to stub my toe into the wood stove. :)

There is a section on reflective items in my book. I'll review that, try it and post it tomorrow. I would love a light box, and it might work... you might end up shooting from only certain angles though if you didn't have a secondary light. I'm betting though that some of those images would be very unique and beautiful with just the light box. I'm just not sure if it would capture all the details you want or not.
February 22nd, 2011
yes it is very cool----love it!
February 22nd, 2011
Wonderful photo and sentiment, Rick! Family history is so important and it needs to be treasured!
February 22nd, 2011
Rick, I think that is a wonderful family history. Maybe you and your kids should put your names and date on that structure for future generations. Great shot.
February 22nd, 2011
The photo is beautiful, and the history behind it even beautiful, very nice post!
February 22nd, 2011
I meant to say even more...
February 22nd, 2011
Oh, wow! In todays world where everyone wants 'new' it is lovely to see this picture and the history that touches your heart. Lovely shot.
February 22nd, 2011
It 's very cool, Rick. The house we live in has been in my husband's family for over 80 years. When we moved here people thought we should build a new house, but I wouldn't have it any other way!
February 22nd, 2011
that's wonderful! i'm sure you have an amazing family history and i bet they're glad you kept that house in the family!!
February 22nd, 2011
So nice to have that family connection. Nice photo.
February 22nd, 2011
great capture!
February 22nd, 2011
what an amazing and true sentiment....wonderful to have that tie to past generations. also i love how you shot this with your wedding band in the shot. that makes a profound statement about love and family to me. best wishes.
February 22nd, 2011
Wonderful story behind this photo. How great to have a home that has been in your family for so many generations.
February 22nd, 2011
Great shot! I love the story behind this!
February 22nd, 2011
That is such a great story behind this photo. It's nice to have something that you can tie to past generations!
February 22nd, 2011
Very dramatic.
February 22nd, 2011
There seems to be a resurgence of people who want to know more about where their family came from and how their roots have contributed to who they are. I think its wonderful that you have such strong ties to yours and that your very home is woven into the family tapestry. Another tender story to go along with a beautiful picture.

I love this image and your thoughts!
February 22nd, 2011
That is fantastic that 4 generations of your family have lived here - must house a lot memories indeed! Wonderful shot in B&W.
February 22nd, 2011
I dont think thats odd at all the history is so obviously there. Walking where people have walked for generations sometimes centuries before is something I often think about when traveling but for it to be personal is special.
February 22nd, 2011
It must feel wonderful to be in the same house after all those years, what a great story and pic.
February 22nd, 2011
So nice to hold history in your hand like that!
February 22nd, 2011
I think is very cool too! I love history, and i love to touch old things and think of who made it, what their life was like etc, its especially nice when its something from within your own family. Lovely shot.
February 22nd, 2011
Really interesting picture and the dialogue makes it even more special.... :)
February 22nd, 2011
You're so lucky to be in one place for that long. I've moved around so much in my past, I'm always envious of people that have stayed in one town/house.
February 22nd, 2011
Love the shot and the history! What great thoughts!
February 22nd, 2011
Hey, I posted something for you, but I'll be taking it down after you get it. No Ace membership... Anyways... http://365project.org/hellcat/365/2011-02-23
February 22nd, 2011
I think that's really cool and a beautiful way to show the meaning.
February 22nd, 2011
Very beautiful image and a very touching story. You are lucky to be able to live there and to give it to your son after 120. My sister lives in the same house our grandparents lived when they came to Israel about seventy years ago and were we grew up. It is going to be destroyed soon and a newer and probably uglier building will take its place.
February 22nd, 2011
Very nice shot and commentary...Feeling such a connection must be nice. I moved from my hometown 30+ years ago so I don't have that kind of connection.
February 22nd, 2011
it is really cool. Great shot too!
February 22nd, 2011
Awesome!
February 22nd, 2011
No worries, and it was my pleasure. :)
February 22nd, 2011
Oh... and can't wait to see what you do with them. :D
February 22nd, 2011
How nice to be able to have the continuity over the years, nice shot Rick
February 22nd, 2011
Very cool and interesting!
February 22nd, 2011
Very cool indeed. Love the history and that it will be carried on. Nice shot :-)
February 23rd, 2011
Yeah, really cool!
February 23rd, 2011
This is really excellent. Good shot, great words.
February 23rd, 2011
Nice! We bought the family farm and that farm and farm house is 126 years old. We don't live there as it is in SD and we work in DC but it is always there for us to visit!

Deb
When I first saw the photo I thought it was a bit eerie but then I read your words and could feel the mood of the picture changing...powerful.
February 23rd, 2011
Wow, AWESOME shot and I loved reading your story! It is rare these days for families to stay in one place for more than a few years let alone pass on the family home from generation-to-generation. It must be very comforting to be surrounded by so much family history and so many memories.
February 24th, 2011
Amen Rick! My two daughters were the only ones in their class of appx. 40 who grew up in the same house all their life, and the only ones who lived on the great-great-grandfather's land.
February 24th, 2011
Yes! I've often wondered that too - makes one think of all that has gone before us/you.
February 25th, 2011
Great story. Thanks for sharing it. What a wonderful thing that your home has been passed down through the generations. That is very cool.
March 3rd, 2011
Great bit of history, and to have the home in the family for that long is wonderful. The stories each room must tell. Symbolic photo. :)
March 3rd, 2011
Love everything about this, the concept, the title, the composition and the monotone - lovely
