I have several old books that I bought as a box lot several years ago at a sale, and this one in particular interests me. The binding is in need of repair, but the book itself is intact. As far as I can tell it is German, and I believe it is some kind of art book. It is filled with some intricate sketches followed by blank pages. The sketches are of simple flowers, leaves, animals, and then it goes into more detailed drawing. It looks like it may be some kind of school text book. I thought I would post a photo of the book's cover to see if anyone could translate the title for me. I was thinking Bruni might be able to. Any help would be appreciated.
I have a nice collection books myself. (both old and new) I love the illustration on the cover of this book. I took German for two years in high school, but can't tell you what this says for the life of me. Try Google translate. It's pretty accurate.
@allie912 Allison, I couild not find a date at this point. I may try to find someone local who may be able to translate for me. I may indeed find a resident where I work who knows the German language.
I love old books too and this one's a treasure. The words on the top of the book translate to "Golden Library...the Education and Knowledge..." and it is from a series of German textbooks, but I can't figure out the bottom words.
This is so wonderful and even more so that our fellow 365ers were able to tell us what the title said. I love old books - hymnals especially. Always on the look out for them.
Lovely old book and nice the way you put it in warm sepia tones. It was fun to read through the posts to find out the translation. I took a guess (took French, not German) and was pretty close. I love buying old books about the Bible or Bible lands. They are truly a treasure!
@digitalrn Opps, should have read everything first..I had an old german bible/bible story book and the date was in Roman Numerals (1890's if I remember correctly). Unless you are missing a few pages in the front, it should be there.
Perhaps Janna could tell you something about it ! That certainly looks an old & loved book ! I could spend all day in a second hand book shop & love books ! Even find the library van interesting & there's not much choice there !!
Nice find. I inherited several old German books since my father was a born in Germany ( left before world war II) and both he and his parents who came a little llater brought few books, some quite old that ran in the family. I know very little German and I understand the book has to do something in education and trainin
Hehe -- Perhaps one day far in the future someone will post the cover of your collection of photos and ask a group of strangers from around the world "Does anyone know this Mr. Riick Schies?" :)) wonderful find Rick!
@bruni Thank you Bruni. I think we have th etitle figured out from some of the feedback. I am going to do some local resesarch to see if I can find a date
Rick, I asked a German friend to translate your book for you. The title reads as follows, "Golden Library of Education and Knowledge - for self-study and further education in the most important branches of science and languages" What a beautiful old book. :)
I love old books too - wonder how many people have read this one over the years? :)
