If you have been following me for awhile, you may remember me talking about our City's plan to build a major railroad overpass which is to be completed in two phases. We have one main roadway that runs North through the City and another that runs South. Frequently the train will stop in the City, and this causes a major delay, and in some cases could prevent emergency vehicles from getting to their destination. The City of Lebanon has been planning this project for several years now. Last year while they were demolishing a row of houses, they came across an old burial lot that belonged to a Church that used to stand at that location. After several months of investigation, they worked with a local Funeral Home who volunteered their service, and they moved all the graves to another cemetery where the souls could finally rest in peace. Progress has been slow, but during the last several weeks, things have picked up. This is an old abandoned factory that sits right along the railraod tracks. They had to relocate all the power lines to the other side, and then they built a wall to prevent debris from falling onto the tracks. Now very carefully they are demolishing the old factory. It's a very slow process. Reports indicate the old bricks are just crumbling when the equipment touches the walls. In a matter of days, it will be vacant. There have been some major changes in this area of the City, but it will be nice to be able to go over the tracks to avoid he delays.
It's wonderful to hear that you are getting an overpass. We have the same problem in the little town near here. The trains are always blocking traffic. It has gone on for years, but there are still no plans for an overpass.
I remember your last shot of this project! Things like this make me feel a bit wistful...I resist change, even for the better. Must mean I'm getting old...
This will be very interesting to follow. Demolition is not always as easy as you think and then to find a burial site..I am happy to hear that got settled. Good collage and great information Rick.
Very interesting to learn about this project. The overpass in my hometown solved that problem, too. Ironically, the road/railroad crossing by a funeral home was closed. Must be a message that needs to be deciphered. ;)
It's interesting to watch things like this change. I can't believe that they found a lost cemetery. That's unbelieveable! Great collage....and I am looking forward to seeing the final pics.
I love those old brick buildings but it seems this one had seen better days and the lack of attention brought it to ruin. Thankfully they took good care of the old cemetary and its occupants in a respectful manner. I remember the last installment of the project. Things are moving along. Nice collage and story- you should see if the local paper might be interested in a local residdent and amateur photographer's perspective on the project.
@sarasdadandmom Apapently Terry the bricks are so brittle they are just falling apart. I agree it would have been nice if they could have used them to build some type of memorial building
Our city is full of train tracks and we just did an overhaul of several of these types of tracks.... i don't know what we did without the underpasses lol!!! Such a huge difference!!
THose brick buildings look so cool... well, hope the new construction will make it better for those who live there :) look fwd to seeing the shots of progress
Neat collage! One thing you can count on is change. Hope it proves a great improvement. I remember when they ripped up the old brick street in front of our house when I was young (that shows how old I am). They allowed people to take as many as they wanted and we enjoyed a patio made of those bricks for years to come.
A big job that's for sure but one that will benefit the whole area ! Will be very interesting to watch through your eyes as I'm sure you will keep us up to date !!! Glad all the deceased got re-allocated OK !
Great, clear collage, as usual Rick, and an interesting story. Nice that you are chronicling it; that's why I'm doing 365p--to chronicle my life on my island for my girls.
I remember when you said this was going to happen.
Progress is always slow, but suddenly it all starts to come together.
I look forward to you progress photos.
Good collage!
Wow! It's too bad that a piece of history has to be torn down, but if the bricks are crumbling I am sure it is for the best. I hope they can make some serious headway before the snow.
Nice of the funeral home to offer their services... really nice..
sad to see history destroyed but progress must happen.............
great collage of the change..... looking forward to seeing the finished bridge...
Nice collage, nice story! Progress. Well, one never knows what you will run into once you start tearing things down. The history of a town or even one's old home can tell us many stories. Keep us posted, Rick.
Nice Collage Rick, sad about the previous graves but also nice to know they got that resolved fairly soon and nicely without any Protests or people demands. Also looking forward to following the progress.
