it is very sad - we pay attention to the plight of orang - utans and whales but insects get overlooked because most people consider them annoying or insignificant - bees and butterflies - all insects - are necessary and such amazing creatures
Thank you for posting this.I am a member of The Monarch Teacher Network and have had the amazing experience of being at the the overwintering grounds in Mexico five times. ( We currently visit the California colonies in January) The Monarch biosphere in Mexico was the most incredible thing I have ever seen. While there is a huge issue of deforestation there...there is also a huge push to create a safe haven for the Monarchs. We, on the other hand ,are eradicating Milkweed at an alarming rate. Pecticides and Herbicides are killing the one and only plant a Monarch needs to survive. No Milkweed.=no Monarchs. No Monarchs=no migration to Mexico Lets all plant milkweed this spring...and hope it is not too late.
@mzzhope I started a small butterfly garden this past summer & I have one milkweed plant. I didn't see any Monarchs during the summer, but did happen to find a couple of caterpillars a few weeks ago!

Look what I saw this morning! My first sighting in my yard!
