yeah because when the DSLRs came in everyone completely stopped using film eh, they do this every time there are new innovations in optics and it never happens, people will still use DSLRs in the same way people still use SLRs
I just spent the morning shooting for a little time at the camera super store in Fairfield NJ with the new Sony A7r and I was blown away. I need to get ACR 8.3 to look at the raw files I shot to see fully what I have. Certainly an advanced camera with high end optics, and so wonderful to handle at less than half the weight (and the bulk) of a 5Diii or a D800, not to mention the new lenses. This does appear to be a game changer, the coming of age of the mirror-less systems now with full frame support and gorgeous lenses.
Just one or two things still to be solved, the "tracking" auto focus (in fact the whole AF sub system without phase detection appeared the weakest part of the system) is the one I noticed, but the techies are on that I trust. Sony has certainly thrown down the gauntlet and I hear (gossip at the store) Panasonic and Olympus will have their new full frame mirrorless offerings in 2014. Canon and Nikon appear to be so very late to this party.
My Sony a7 arrived last week and the 35mm sony zeis lens this week.
Early days but very excited to have a 'pocket' camera - but not the demise of the DSLR for me - as I'll still be using my 5D mklll.
I especially like the new 55-210mm zoom lens I bought for my Sony Nex 5. I can actually hold it steady to shoot without a tripod. And it's light. I think my Canon is a better camera, but the ease of carrying the Nex is a real plus. Mine does not have a view finder, so my chief complaint is not being able to see what I'm doing in bright sunlight.
@juliedduncan I agree, Julie. I think we are in a real transitional phase and lower prices should be in the future, no matter what direction you choose.
@catwoman2 Glad you like your NEX 5 Mary. The A7 is a totally different animal though. Full Frame, Full Featured and definitely Full Priced. Really trying for the high pro end it seems; not even an onboard flash to show us amateurs who is a pro and who is not!
@allie912@juliedduncan The prices of the Sony NEX series are already down significantly. The current "high end" Lumix Micro Four Thirds cameras (G6, GH3) are significantly below their original list prices as well, but perhaps that's just for the holidays? Don't think we'll see the Sony A7 and the A7r much under their current levels for a long time though ($1,700 and $2,200). They really do break new ground.
@allie912@juliedduncan ah the dilemma, dilemma! I've been interested I a mirrorless camera and would of course love a FF dslr, but had been put off by the weight, now that I have started researching I discovered the Sony A7, pricey but a ff without the weight. Oh my brain and computer have been going in circles for days! @jocasta are any of your recent posts images for the Sony A7?
@frankhymus Yes, I looked at the 7 on Amazon -- a big jump! I really am fond of my 5 and am thinking of adding another lens -- a 50mm, a 35mm, a wide angle? Any suggestions?
@catwoman2 Well, I have zero experience with the NEX line, but I'd think about a wide angle prime. The f/2.8 16 mm looks interesting on the specification sheet. I imagine you have something like a 16-50 kit lens to cover between that and the 50-210 you mentioned above?
@sianipops No - the lens only arrived on Thursday - and I'm still finding my way around. Would you like me to let you know when I start posting A7photos
All we're seeing is an advancement in technology (i.e. going mirrorless). The need for advanced cameras with high-end optics well never go away.
BTW, I have a camera with a EVF. I cannot imagine going back to a optical view finder. I like it a lot.
