Instagram? Seriously?

Hands up all of you who thought that Instagram was for selfies and pictures of cats. This chap made $15k in one day by selling prints:

Did you read the comments? I agree with them who would pay $150 for those 4x6 priints? I don't buy that story.

Hmmm .... really? Maybe people are buying photos of themselves. Personally, I don't get how anyone would want any of these hanging on the wall but this guy has a ton of followers. So, maybe I just don't get it.

I follow some great photographers on Instagram. Not sure I would pay that much for this guy's work, I have to say - but if you're a good photographer with your dSLR, using Instagram doesn't suddenly make you bad at what you do.

The main issue with selling prints from Instagram surely has to be the quality? I've had a couple of mine printed (pictures of Blue The Dog that we wanted to get framed after she was put down last year), and the resolution was pretty low. I guess they're only designed to be viewed on a little iPhone screen - once you start enlarging for print, there's a definite limit to how far you can go before the image becomes unrecognisable.

The book could be semi-interesting, but as single shots these are not working for me.

The important lesson here is marketing. You can be the best photographer in the world, but if no one knows you, you will never make any money. A mediocre photographer with 41000 followers will always make more money. This guy knows how to promote himself (his masterplan is working right now, since we all went to see his profile)....
