mac users: Photoshop or Aperture?

June 1st, 2010
I just got a Mac, and well I dont know which photo editing program to get. People on the internet (google searches) seem extremely divided on the subject, and im kinda curious. I was once an avid user of Photoshop CS2, paint, and any crappy windows editing programs, and the majority of my pictures i get help from my girlfriend who is amazing on CS2.

So, I ask the world of mac users on here, Aperture or Photoshop? or if they really suck anything else?

THANX!

Photoshop is an editing tool, Aperture is more of an organising tool, like an upgraded iPhoto, it does do retouching and a whole host of photography things, but they are not exclusive. I think you are trying to compare 2 different genres of software.

I got Aperture when I got my MB Pro, but have been too lazy to give it a shot since I'm familiar with Photoshop. Hence my reluctance to even use Lightroom. That's probably the better comparison - Lightroom vs Aperture.

Good luck. I'll be interested in hearing what Mac folks are using. I for one use Photoshop and still use iPhoto for my organization. At some point I think I'll have to make the leap to something other than iPhoto for my organization, but as for editing, Photoshop has been serving me fine.

I'm a Mac and I use Photoshop. CS2 on my machine (it's very old) and CS3 on my husband's. For organization I use iPhoto and haven't had any problems with it. My laptop runs Linux and i have used a variety of different editing programs, I still like Photoshop the best. Part of this may come from my newspaper background, I learned Photoshop (along with InDesign, PageMaker and Illustrator) very thoroughly in college.

I'm a long time Mac user and I've been using both Aperture and Lightroom but I dropped Aperture with the introduction of Lightroom 2, due to the local adjustment brush and preset features.

I tested Aperture 3 but I think it still hasn't caught up to Lightroom for following two main reasons:

1. Split Toning feature is non-existant in Aperture 3
2. History log of adjustments is non-existant in Aperture 3

These two features are killing arguments for my personal taste as they are a big part of my phostprocessing workflow.

What I'm missing in Lightroom is the OS X integration -> Media Browser that makes your Aperture Library available in most applications.

Matt's right. A better comparison is Lightroom vs Aperture.
I use Lightroom to open my RAW files. I will crop and do slight adjustments. As well I sometimes use presets then I export to Photoshop to continue to edit. It's just part of your work flow.

thanks a lot guys, decided to stick with my loyalties and went with lightroom... like it so far and it seems to be exactly what i was looking for with an easier interphase than CS2-5 and all the organization i need compared to aperture
