I like the third one; to me it shows the emotions more!

Bob
I choose the middle one since there are two points of interest for color, both faces.

They are all lovely and seem to work well. I personally like the one in the middle the best because I like how the colors bring it to life.

I agree with Bob . . . the color brings my focus to the faces.

Altho I prefer the blouse in b&w with no pink showing, overall I prefer the middle shot because I find it warmer, more humanising and it is far more flattering to the little baby. It is a cosier shot and prettier.

I agree with @carolinedreams - if you could take the blouse and the green background in the middle one to b&w ... I like it. or vice-versa, bring the color to head, hands and baby in the 3rd ... you get the idea LOL

There are great things in all three. The drawback in them all, most apparent in the middle one, is the wide DOF. Portraits will typically have the background significantly blurred, even if there is a background at all. Greyscale conversion can sometimes help out, but not too much here since the background tones are on a par with the subjects.

If you are seriously into Photoshop or similar, you can mask the background and desaturate the color there (or lighten or darken the tone for the greyscale converstions). Since the background is distinctly distant from the subject, you don't have the additional worry of having to "grade" a background that starts just behind (or sometimes even in front of) the subject and extends back a considerable distance.

An easier way is possible here since the background color doesn't appear in the foreground. Just desaturate the greens globally. That will really help the mifddle one. You can play a "lightness" trick similarly for greyscale conversions if the colors are separated.

Thank You so much for your thoughts and your wonderful comments and suggestions. I guess I will be busy on the youtube tutorials and learning some new techniques. these are exactly the kinds of critiquing I need to push forward.

@tigerdreamer hi karen, i usually lean towards black and white in many portraits. in this series however i do like the middle image in color. it gives a very warm emotion. nice shot

I'd go for the middle one ... like all 3 but the grandma's hair seems to merge into the background on the other 2 and for me that distracts from her lovely expression and makes it seem a little more surprised. Hope that helps
