I'd like critiques please

Hi :)

Just for fun, I decided to submit 2 pics to a local photography contest. Before submitting them, I would like to have some critiques please :)

Click on the pic to see it bigger.

For the theme "nature":

For the theme "vacation" (this contest is in Québec, so we don't see palmtrees everyday lol)

Thanks..... I'm ready!

I suck at giving critique.. But I'll tell you what I like and what I don't like.
But that would just be *my* opinion.
I LOVEEEEEE the first one. The focus is amazing, and I love how you don't see where the flowers end. The rabbit gives this photo, a soft feminine feel, and it's amazing!
The other one is perfect as well
I love palm trees, and love sunsets, and love silhouettes, and love clouds!
So this picture just has EVERYTHING i like.

Ah, obviously there isn't anything i don't like..
good luck!

Both good, but I love the nature one - cute bunny, perfectly composed in a field of clover - and the focus is excellent.

Really like them both, but the rabbit is my favourite I think. :-)

I like the rabbit shot ! Do you have enough resolution to crop ? Maybe get really tight on his head so that his eye is to the extreme right...mostly just his head to the right and the flowers filling the rest of the frame !

I think both photos are great, but I think the first one is better. I love the fact that you shot from an angle that give the appearence of an endless field of clovers, and plus bunnies are just cute!

We have a bunny at home so my vote is for the rabbit....the DOF is perfect !

First is good. Rule of thirds has been applied pretty well, but it feels like the rabbit is just a bit too close to the edges. It needs some wiggle-room. ;) The exposure is good, the focus is clean. I'd say it's a pretty picture. But, what makes it interesting? There's not a lot of contrast in the shot. By that, I specifically mean local contrast, which is what draws the eye to your subject. The eye goes to the rabbit because of shape and colour (nothing wrong with that), but I find it easy to start looking elsewhere in the shot - it doesn't capture my attention, so to speak. That doesn't mean it's a bad shot! It just means that it's a photo of a cute bunny. Doesn't really move forward from that. To me, that is.

The second shot, not liking much. There's a lot of negative space up top that doesn't need to be there - you could probably crop off the top quarter of the shot, to make it more striking. The light is really pretty and sillhouettes can be great, but they're not clean sillhouettes because of the tree tops at the bottom of the shot, and the edge of the left palm is out of the frame. It's a shot that wouldn't make me stop to look at it. Again, not because it is a bad shot, but because of the subject and lack of punch.

I really hope that all doesn't seem harsh. Remember - it is just my opinion. And there would be those who disagree with me (and they have every right to, and probably hundreds of reasons why). I just think that if you are shooting for a competition, you need more than a "technically proficient" photograph - you need something to make your photograph stand out from all the other technically good images.

I tend to agree with Jinx about the palm tree...there's lots to look at in that pic that steals focus from the cool lighting. I wonder what a crop would look like, just in the orange part, with enough palm leaf to know it's a palm? I do like the bunny though, i think it does capture interest enough. But again I'd play with a really tight crop if you can get away with it.. OR during the shot i'd have given him more room over his ears...just me of course. You're very brave to open yourself to critique! Good luck with your contest. :)

@daliadestructo @islawight @wormentude @rebcastillo77 @shakar Thanks :D

@nyweb Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it, but I think I prefer the original pic.

@jinximages Thanks for your critique. It doesn't seem harsh to me :) I wasn't afraid to ask critique here, because I knew it would stay constructive, and not only be "trash talk". And sometimes with our own pics, it's hard to be objective, so I think a good way to learn and see "new" things in your pics is to have critique.

@kylapalin Thanks for your critique to and for the suggestion. As basic as it can be, you reminded me that you don't need to see the whole palm tree (or any object in a pic) to know what it is, and I kind of like "incomplete" objects in a pic.

I can't really play around with the bunny pic (already cropped it, so if I crop more it starts to look not so good). And just a bit higher in the pic, the clover field ends and you see a road, but I wanted to give the impression of an endless field. So I think I'll just keep it that way.

For the palm tree pic, what about this one?

From a composition standpoint, they are wonderful. However, to me, they lack dimension or perspective. I have had this challenge many times, and I have found that by adding some saturation (not a lot), and contrast to separate the shadows, midtones, and highlghts, that it helps a lot.

Always the best to your success in a contest. They are a lot of fun.
