Hold down alt and then a number on your keyboard. Not the numbers above the letters, the ones to the right of the arrows. There's many symbols, like alt+3 is ♥, alt + 14 is ♫, and alt + 13 is ♪.

I have a Mac and I don't have an extended keyboard so I don't think these directions work for me. However I'm sure there are others for the Mac which I will try to uncover. Thanks everyone for your help. This is a very generous community!

They're all on the computer anyway (idk about Macs though) but: Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map

@ellen it's a smiley. On my browser, if you do ctrl + at the same time, it zoomz the screen and you can see that it's a smiley.
