Still shot feedback - ways to improve?

Went to another roller derby game last night and...it was just not my night for photography. Easily one of the worst games I've shot in a long time for reasons I'd rather not get into.

At any rate, this is one of the better shots I took...I did a small crop but other than that it's a direct upload.

What can I do to improve this shot?

Come on...be mean ;)

Thanks in advance everyone

OK, Chris. I don't know detailed photography technique, but I know what I like. I think if you had a balance of light in the upper right corner to the light in the lower left, it would be more interesting.

this shot is horrible. I looks bad. You cant improve it because it's so bad. It's boring. You can't take pictures.

;) IM KIDDINGGG!!! (you said be mean :D)

My real opinion: I think this is a nice shot...it is definitely interesting...but I'd say the only thing that I would change about it would be the lighting. It needs to be lightened just a tad. Then it would be easier to tell what it is a picture of...that is unless you wanted people to stop and think about what it was lol but its just a little too dark for me because it was hard to tell where the outer line of the jeans was and where this was taken because I can't see what is behind it. If you were going for us not being able to see what was behind the shoes...then I think maybe there should be more focus on the paper. So we can read it better :) either that or I cant read upside down at all whatsoever ;)

So really...all in all. good picture! just some tips :)

I do like the composition of this photo. I agree with David and Lauren, it is a bit dark for my liking. i'm not a professional and I don't really know any techniques, but from what I see, either you can increase the lighting a little bit or you can crop it, so that there is not too much "black" left on the right hand side that draw your eyes right to it. This is totall just my personal opinion, I can't wait to see what other real professionals have to say about this photo.

Hey Chris!
I agree about the lightening on the above. Great composition, but I do think it needs to be lightened to get more details. I think the denim with the shoes is a great detail that you don't want lost.

If you have Photoshop, I would also sharpen it, maybe even a bit oversharpened. PS gurus, please contradict me if I'm wrong, I'm a newbie. It's got a gritty quality (gritty feel, the focus isn't) so it might benefit from punching that up with some sharpening.

@David - I can play around with that

@ Lauren - You totally broke my heart, and now I have to go cry...in the corner...in the dark...alone...with an alcoholic beverage (...Jokes :P)

The main problem with the photo (as with the majority of the photos of the night) is that the lighting was super low. I can play around with lightening it up but then I come into the problem of higher noise/exposing grains and all that fun stuff.

Thanks for the tips so far! Super appreciated :)

Ahh more comments before I can reply!

Thanks Chimom and maria Z for your opinions! It is a dark photo (sad face) so I'll definitely play around with that one

Thanks again!

The bright corner leads my eye off the page, its a darker photo that lacks some detail and makes the subject hard to recognize at first glance, but that could be cause of the small size too. Overall a slightly brighter photo might add some interest.

The bg is kinda distracting too, I keep looking back there trying to figure out what that orange strip is, it doesn't seem to add to the photo at all.

Shoes Part two:

So I took the majority's advice of lightening up the photo (and tried to desaturate other parts). This is the result.

Better, or worse?

I personally believe it looks worse than your original. I really do like the original and it has a lot to do with the orange light that is present in the photo. And also as you know I enjoy my photos darker than lighter =P
But that is just my opinion

My eye still goes to the lower corner, its brighter and its sharper. At this point I would say you would need to retake the photo, but thats just me.
