2010 Photo book on Blurb

January 23rd, 2011
So today, I finished my first draft of my 2010 photobook on Blurb. It can be found here: http://www.blurb.com/books/1938178

So I have 2 things.

1)The preview doesn't seem to show up for me. I don't know if it's my computer or not.

2) I've never made such an extensive photo book before, and I could really use some critique on the layout, as this thing is really expensive, and I want to make it as good as possible.

If you're interested in critiquing it, or just seeing an example, would you open it and let me know what you think (or if you can even view it).

Thanks.

Daniel, I just looked your book (all that would open) and from first glance, pretty good. As it is a chronological piece, I don't think there's much more to do. One question, did you write much with each of your posts on 365? If so, those posts could add to the overall experience. On the other hand, the photos should speak for themselves.
Good luck, Greg.

@gadams83 Thanks for responding. Unfortunately, I just joined this community about a week and a half ago, and uploaded the whole year of photos. For 2011, I'm planning on adding quotes.

I had trouble getting all the pages to open but what I saw is fantastic - you have really inspired me to make one myself. I love the photos on black pages and I love how you have altered all the sizes and shapes to add extra interest. If you don't mind me asking, how much us it going to cost to do a whole year in a book?

@musicguy1982 I just joined also. I mentioned the quotes only as to add to it, but I believe you have a fine book as it is. Are you making this for yourself, a gift, or do you plan on selling it, or all of the above?

@kjarn It's going to be about $130, but I don't really get all that many prints done throughout the year, so to me it's worth it (presuming it prints well).

@gadams83 Due to the price, I will probably just buy one for myself. I don't think there's anyone out there who would want to buy it...especially for $130.

Daniel, Wow... I'm impressed. I have only recently heard about Blurb and am looking into putting my project into a book that way, but yours is the first I've been able to browse through. So, on the down side, I have nothing to compare it to, but on the up side, I thought it looked really great! I was able to see most of it, but some pages never appeared, they just showed up white and blank. I was also curious if you had comments with pictures (which I see you answered above) and whether you would have included those.

As far as the layout... I thought it was well organized and creative. I liked how some shots were highlighted on the whole page and others were grouped appropriately without looking cluttered on the page. Also, some, I guess they had black backgrounds that blended with the page color, seemed to jump right off the page. I thought it was really well done!

Can I ask you... how long did that take you to design and compile? And, ballpark, how much does that cost?

Finally, welcome to 365! You take some really outstanding and creative pictures and I'm going to have to find you and start following you! =)

@LindaC Most of those questions are answered above; you were probably typing when I wrote my last response.

It took a while to put together. I started working on it in early November. I titled all my photos, and if it was taken away from my hometown, I included the location. The only bummer for me with the book so far is that it's too many pages to get premium paper, but I would've had to have cut out 20 pages and not included the addendum at the back.

Has anyone ordered from Blurb and have preferences on Dust Cover vs. Image Wrap?
January 23rd, 2011
@musicguy1982 Ha! Yes, I was typing when you were. =) So what kind of paper will it be printed on? Still photo-type paper, I assume, just not the best quality? Thanks for the info & for sharing your project.

I just started and wonder what people do at the end of the year when the project is completed. I looked at your project and liked what I could see. I thought that the headings for all the photos add to the project. Good luck.

I just had another look at your book and this time it let me look at the whole thing. I still think its great but if you are open to critique the only page I don't like is 7-11 May as I think there is too much blank space. I'm also unsure about the reason for the addendum. I get that its to include more photos but it seems to take away from the purpose of the book which of course is 365 - a photo a day.

Are you getting the large landscape size? What paper do you get if you don't get premium opera? How many pages is it without the addendum? Whats the difference between a dust jacket and Image wrap besides the price?
January 23rd, 2011
@kjarn Thanks for looking again. Without the addendum, I am at 184 pages, meaning I would need to lose 4 pages to bump up to premium paper, which is 100# vs. 80# that the standard paper has. The reason i included the addendum is because I was originally going to make a second book, but it's much cheaper to combine it into one book.

@musicguy1982 - I;m looking at the site now and from what I can see you can only have 160 pages if you want premium paper. I found a site that does books on premium paper up to 300 pages but I think the pages are white.

I like. I was going to say just make a second book for the addendum but I get the $$ issue.

I have one question the windmills, featured prominantly on 56-57 & also later in the addendum, are those in Paw Paw? I am from the Chicago land area as well & always see the windmills in Paw Paw when going south to MO to visit family.
January 23rd, 2011
@mikichelle The windmills are on I-55 just north of Normal, so I believe Paw Paw is in the area. These specific ones I believe were in Arrowsmith.
January 23rd, 2011
@kjarn Ah yes, you are right, so I would have to lose 24 pages, and I just don't want to shrink my larger images down.
