So here is a quick attempt of a picture of the clouds. I like the contrast between the clouds and the blue sky but I would have liked more time to work on the composition. Tell me what you think and how i could have done better.

just my opinion...

your clouds composition seem dynamic,
but i'd rather shoot with sky (+clouds) became the background (silhouette, building, panorama/landscape) than only shooting sky+clouds. i think it's more interesting to me. Unless you capture a very dramatic sky condition..

have you tried CPL filter? it will make sky more deeper..

Thanks! I will keep the silhouette idea in mind for the next shot I take. I am assuming by CPL you mean a circular polarizing filter and that is on my long list of things to get.

I agree with wahysup. Sky and clouds is a mix of strong highlights, and deep color tones. With digital, strong highlights can blow out, leaving no data for the computer, and you have nothing to work with. As he mentioned a CPL is a good investment. (Circular Polarizer).Depending on the size of your lens, they will definitely not be the cheapest filter you will buy, but one of the best. They also help get rid of window reflections, sun reflections off water, etc. Best used in early morning, versus the bright of day. Check one out. You will love it.

Thanks. I went back to the original file and erased the spots and thank you Chris for letting me know the best time of day to use the filter . That i didnt know but i am definitely going to have to experiment.

Rochele mentioned spots on the lens. For once, I will trump her. (she'll kick my butt for this, as she is a Steelers fan, and I am a Browns fan). Anyway, those look like dirt or dust on the sensor. They really show their ugliness in the skies. I get them frequently, as I am always changing lenses in godawful conditions.

I use sensor swabs and an ether cleaner. Well worth the investment for anyone with a DSLR.

Also, for the CPL, sometimes in real bright sun, if you don't dial it right, everything has a muddy gray cast, which is why I mentioned the specific times of day. Someone else may have a suggestion for that. If so, i would love to hear it!
