I didn't know I could do that!

January 8th, 2012
Had my camera for just over a year getting by using the very basic 30 page manual. I'm pleased with the picture quality but didn't know which combinations of buttons to select. Also, with the great pics here I wished I could get similar effects - now I can!
Just discovered a 200 page user manual online & realise the fantastic things my camera is capable of! Can only think that this expanded manual is on disc that I didn't receive.

Well chuffed!

What do you feel you were missing?

What kind of camera?

Like you have said Geri you had a basic manual that came with the camara. These days they tend to make the full manual available online in PDF format, rather than provide a disc. So that would be the way to go.
You may need to register your camara first though with the makers website. ie, cannon, nikon etc. But failing that i`m sure if you just google your manual PDF im sure you will find it somewhere anyway.
Hope this is of help.

Thanks folks. This will show what a complete novice I am so please be gentle. I have a Canon PowerShot SX30 IS & only use it as a point & shoot with a bit of a zoom facility. Now I have the full manual, I realise I can adjust tone/colour, use effects like fisheye etc. Even the zoom did more than I realised. A friend did a 365 project last year which encouraged me to have a go & now I'm discovering what I can really do with a couple of pushes of the buttons.

I too was a point and shoot person but the quality of images around here has prompted me to take more interest in composition, lighting and subject matter, and I found myself reading the camera manual to find out what else there is.
Still not sure I'll ever use or even understand all the features of even my simple camera, but feels good to be inspired and feel pushed to higher things :)

Hi Geri! I have an SX30, and I love it. One thing I discovered early on was to turn off "digital zoom"...I'm not expert enough to explain it, so I found an article that explains the gist.

http://www.technobuffalo.com/comparisons/optical-vs-digital-zoom-whats-the-difference/

Basically, digital zoom is just like cropping, and I would prefer to choose how much cropping (and quality loss) I do in post-processing. Now, I can't remember how I disabled digital zoom, but that trusty manual you found will have it in there!

Happy snapping!

@patchworkperson
I have started following you....welcome to 365.
BUT, have a look in the manual to find out how to turn off the date stamp on your shots.

@patchworkperson , Hey....get to play with your camera. If it looks like a digital SLR so play around with different moods & setting.I would say to start with "Priority,,,P mood".Its easy & ya easy.Once you know how everything works, go to A,S and then M mood.Hope this helps.
