Photography is the art, science and practice of creating durable images by recording light or other electromagnetic radiation, either electronically by means of an image sensor or chemically by means of a light-sensitive material such as photographic film.[1] Typically, a lens is used to focus the light reflected or emitted from objects into a real image on the light-sensitive surface inside a camera during a timed exposure. The result in an electronic image sensor is an electrical charge at each pixel, which is electronically processed and stored in a digital image file for subsequent display or processing. The result in a photographic emulsion is an invisible latent image, which is later chemically developed into a visible image, either negative or positive depending on the purpose of the photographic material and the method of processing. A negative image on film is traditionally used to photographically create a positive image on a paper base, known as a print, either by using an enlarger or by contact printing.
Photography has many uses for business, science, manufacturing (e.g. photolithography), art, and recreational purposes.

Photography can be so many things,
What is it to you?

For me, it is an art, a form of expression, and an escape.

What do you do with yours?

Myself, I make some prints, I really like making cards, otherwise just a slide show on the computer.

It's my hobby, or actually one of my many hobbies and/or distractions in life. It helps keep me from going totally bonkers with the other pressures of life.

I pay a lot of money to go to art school to study and get better at it, so in some ways, it's a monthly bill. Otherwise, it's my way of expressing how things look to me.

Escape for me too. A bit of a science, but more of an art - more intuitive and flowing, more of a way of life. :D

It is my happy place. It is my me time. It is my creative outlet. It is eye opening and has opened a new world to me. It is an addiction and a hobby but more than a hobby since it has started to pay for itself. =)

It's my therapy! LOL! I find it so relaxing and enjoyable! I love that I can show others what I see through my eyes.

Photography for me is a distraction from every day life.
I've turned something I enjoy into something I love :)

It is an art form, a hobby, a way to express myself.

For me it is a way of touching others in such a way that other forms are not able to.

The emotion and story telling that can be captured in a fraction of a time is in its self timeless.

To be able to create something that will outlast time itself is a fantastic concept.

I have over 13 years of photography in digital format which represents over 40,000 images. The hold my past in their moments, they hold the laugher, the tears, to good times and the bad. They are in essence part of who I am and who my family is.

These images are to be looked at and enjoyed, which is why we push them out through our screens savers on both our computers and TV's located around the house. We will often sit down in front of the TV and just watch the photo go by and remember the times we have had, and talk about each photo.

It is something that we are very glad we have and as I get older and the memory gets older, these will be what is left.

Just moments in time.

For me, photography is a means of escape from what is often a mundane and boring existance, its a form of self expression and a process of letting go of alot things i bottle up.
Its a way I get to show people what i see through my eyes, and at times, to give them some insight into my quite often bizarre brain. It's a form of art, and art doesnt always make sense, but like all art it's subjective to both the artist and the viewer, what i take photos of and what underlying messages i put into photos is often to complex or personal and doesn't always transcend to the viewer, and quite often i like that.
Everyone has such different views on what photography is. This is a great thread! so cool to see other people views!

It's an outlet...for whatever I am feeling at the moment.......

It's positive "me" time. It reminds me to look at everything in an attentive way and search for the beauty which is all around us no matter where we are. It's a fabulous extra pleasure if one of my images touches and communicates something to someone else.

It's a way for me to show people how I view the world. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, photography allows me to show people the beauty I see in them. My viewers and clients reactions are my way of escaping and understanding the world. For me it's less about expressing myself and creating, and more about how my art invokes emotion, that's the true beauty in my work.

This is the only SANITY i have...you should just see my other life

Photography I see as a way for me to pluck something out from behind my eyes and say "You see?! This is what I see! This is how I see it." I l generally like them to construct narratives, I like my photos to have a subject, performing a verb on an object. Even if the verb is just "be" and the object is just space.

I like getting the odd print done, books for grandparents, christmas cards for family etc.

It's an outlet for me, for sure! It's my definite passion, I probably spend too much time thinking about it! I love being able to push my limits. I love that photography is a never ending journey. There is always something more to learn, there is always a subject that I want to "Get" or places I would love to go to capture the beauty. It freezes time with my 3 children who are growing soooo, soooo, soooo fast. I love that I can look back on their pictures and they can melt my heart or that by having pictures, I can look back and see those baby toes, drooling smiles and the candid moments when they didn't think I was looking.

Photography is definitely the window to my soul.

Life.
Love.
Job.

I love my job.

It's fun, it's something I do where I'm occasionally quite happy with the results, and I can't say that about too many things! I would love more time (and money) to try and get better or at least know more stuff about the whole thing but then in the end it's my hobby not my job. I definitely wouldn't have gotten into it without having stumbled across the old 365 though!

From the moment I picked up a simple camera with nothing more than a hole and mechanism to turn the film, I've been fascinated by photography. It's not a hobby, it's just a part of who I am. I have lots of interests and photography has always been there. Even during the times when I put the camera down, it was in the back of my mind to take pictures. Like something nagging at me, it's a calling.

So, I have thrown myself into again, head first, with this project. This feeds the artistic side that needs nurturing in the same manner we need spiritual nuturing.

For me, it's a way to record my life in a way that is fun. It's not unlike those who keep journals. Sharing moments is the most important to me. I hope I can do it in a creative way but ultimately it's a way to connect with people. It's a form of communication, like talking on the cell phone or texting.

It is a way to record, to always remember... It is also my creative outlet, and my happy place each day. I plan on keeping it a hobby, so I always LOVE it

a few years ago I would have said that photography is art a way of letting others see what I see but over time I have come to realise it is so much more than that photography is life something without which I would be lost it is an escape from the humdrum into a happy place so in a way it is also a therapy but even these definitions do not do justice to what photography means to me because I guess photography is me.

What I do for myself is art, an expression of myself, therapy. But what I do professionally is often becoming just work. I'm determined this year to steer my business into a direction that will become more challenging and pleasing to my creative side.

I would like to make a photo book at the end of the 365 and my dream would be to have a few pieces in a gallery.
