I went for the Sigma 8-16, great lens 108 degrees ;)
If i had the money i would also add the Sigma 10-20 so go for that if your after an excellent wangle, i read lots of great reviews about it.
I have an olympus which means 4/3 system so I have an olympus lens, but I adore my wide angle lens and am fully satisfied. If you are in the U.S. you can rent it from borrowlenses.com and test it out prior to spending that much money. I did and do not regret the expense.
i've come across a lot of opinions on the internet suggesting that the tokina 11-16mm is one of the best wide angle lens for DX format cameras like the D90. I haven't got one myself so i can't recommend it. but definitely worth checking out IMO.
@angievega I had it bookmarked for the next time I go lens buying-er- I mean dreaming.
Additionally I'd suggest looking around for lens rental places, that may carry ones you're interested in. That way you can have a full trial run before you buy.
@angievega I've heard of them as well, pretty sure the guy from improvephotography uses them, poke around on that blog it's got good stuff. Being in Australia I havent' been able to use them and can't personally recommend them, though I totally support the idea of try before you buy. Saved me from buying the canon 28-300 lens since it is an arm breaker. I'll still hire it for events where I want the full range without having to switch lenses and risk dust.
I shoot Canon, but I have the Tokina 11-16 and love it. It just has that well-built/sturdy feeling to it. It even survived a fall from the car seat down onto concrete with only a crack in the lens hood (thanks, hubs). Good luck!
I have had the Tamron for two weeks now and really like it. Here are a few shot not on a tri pod i have shot with it. I have a few Canon L lenses to compare it to and it really is a great lens for the price.

This is one of the first photos I took with it.
