Pricing help

June 28th, 2010
Hey up,

I've just taken my first proper booking, I'm nervous! Anyhoo, he asked how much I'd charge for a shoot of two DJs/producers. I'm going to tell him he can have it discounted as I don't want to put myself under too much pressure but I haven't a clue what to charge.

Those that do paid portraits and whatnot - how much do you charge? I don't want to sell myself short.

Help!

Hey, congratulations!!! Thats wonderful :-)
The charging is tricky - it depends what you do!! I have done straight forward portraits for about 2-3 hours work for around £200. I also gave them on a disk, I don't get them printed because I dont like that side of things, I stopped it after I stopped using film - it seemed pointless trying to control things when its so easy for people to copy prints with decent scanners etc now anyway. Oops, tangent, sorry.

If you want to have an idea of the rates in your area, have a peek online to see what they charge for a set of portraits, perhaps that will help you?
I guess you've just got to decide a few things - what your time is worth, if you have to go on location, how far have you got to go (travel costs), and any other costs incurred.
Also, make sure they know about copyright rules. If they plan to use the pics for advertising or anything, then you could charge more, quite a lot more... or at least ask for a credit where possible to get your name out there!

Good luck, and have fun!!

Thanks so much Frieda! I had a bit of a hunt around and have told him I would usually do it for £150 but will give him half price.
