@bec01I am a very visual person and I find it the best way to bookmark websites / images / recipes / etc I like.
I am a teacher and the fact that I can go to my education board, *look* at the pictures taken from websites and I can very quickly and easily find the activity I was looking for without having to remember which web page it was on.
...and other pinners that I follow often pin new or interesting ideas that I would not otherwise have seen.
I also pin lots of tips and tricks relate to photography on there.
@bec01 photos from here - generally yes. I do pin my own favourites of my own pictures as well (because I can't pin just my favs of my own here). Otherwise, it';s just the same as bookmarking a website via an image rather than a web page title. ...and I find things much faster via images than words.
I follow certain people - generally people I know, or have similar interests / profession to.
It may be time consuming if you have no reason to pin, but for a teacher like me, the time I save in locating a resource I wan to use is invaluable.
You just go ahead and pin it in your board, the pinterest site will be the one who automatically mention the site where you got your pictures or quotes or recipes. You also get to follow people. The site is not only restricted to photography, it is a smorgasbord of whatever catches your fancy.
@bec01 i discovered this recently, and love it ! Still very early days, but you should accept the invitation because you can't just sign up.....you can wait for months to join.....think i am going to really enjoy it for all sorts of reasons...
My niece showed me this recently. Once you've joined you put in your interests and then you are connected with others who have the same interests and you spend hours of time wading through exciting stuff that's been 'pinned' and therefore accessible to you too and then you pin it so you can keep it. So basically it's a way to locate stuff that interests you and keep it on an electronic pinboard! But beware, it can become incredibly time-consuming.
@sharonaddison thanks Sharon, i did accept and i'm still trying to figure it out...x
@tulipgirl thanks Alicia.. i haven't got as far as putting my interests in yet!! I'm not sure i've got my head around pinning other people's pictures yet... feels a bit weird, mid you i felt a bit like that faving photos on here to start with.
@michelleyoung i agree, I'm wondering if i am too old for all this now! i'm finding most new things have to be explained to me in very simple terms!! maybe i should start studying again!!
@corymbia oh I really love how you explained that! I have it, but rarely use it cos I just didn't get it... but now, OMG ... that will make things so much easier!! I'm the same, will remember a pic, but not a website name... think I might just have to kiss you!!! lol
I find it to be partly useful, but mostly like other whole social network things... like facebook a big time suck if you're susceptible like I am.
I have started pinning photos I like from this site b/c then I can seem them all in one place. And also to spread the love outside of 365... though for all I know they are pretty famous photographers and don't need it.
Yes, it's definitely like a visual bookmarking system. You can also sort things out into your own categories, as well as share your "pins" with friends via things like FB.
@bec01 oh me too ! And what was interesting a lot of friends started following me, and I knew nothing about it before a week ago ! So a lot of people i know are on it, but need to wean myself off this site before i find another addiction !
I am on Pinterest and use it to stash things I find on the web that I have that "Oh! How cool! I need to remember this" moment but know that I will forget before long. It becomes a visual storage bin for me to revisit things that interest me from photography that inspires me to tips and tricks I want to try or poses that I want to play with. I also pin recipes that look easy/tasty, clothes I would happily stash in my closet and so on. It is like a handy place for post it notes from the web.
Recently Pinterest and 365 are my new Facebook. I have been using Pinterest for probably 6 month now.....So how Pinterest works:It does work on some sort of invitation system though you might be able to request an invite (not sure). So when starting your account you can link it with you Facebook. This is good b/c some of your FB friends might already have a Pinterest acct and you can automatically follow them and see what they like. On your home page will be all the "pins" of the people you follow. If you do not have many to start you can look through random pinners from clicking everything at the top and selecting what area that interests you.
From there if you find thing you really like you can "pin" them or you will actually click "repin", and put it on a designated board (that you name) that is on your page.
For example I use it a lot to look up recipes. I have found so many yummy new recipes on here. I have a board that is called "sweet treats" that I pin desserts onto and one called "yummy things to eat" where other things that I want to try is kept. I really do not need a recipe book now b/c I can find just about anything I want on Pinterest and have them all in one spot!
Other things of interest that you can "pin" do it yourself ideas, remodeling, arts and crafts, photography, sports, wedding planning, clothing, baby things just to name a few!
It can be a time waster, but I like the fact when I see some that is a good idea I can "pin" it and come back to it later instead of forgetting it. Sorry this was so long and I hope I helped answer some of your questions and did not confuse you more!=)
The last two explainations are perfect! I love pinterest! You can pin anything, and no one takes any offence to what you pin. You simply pin images that you just love.
For example, I have a pin board named "Bold". It's full of black and white photographs only. A few breasts and whatnot. I get a lot of inspiration for my own photography, and find what I love about certain photographs.

@sweett i did have someone repin something that they were offended by.... apparently being non-religious makes brad pitt ugly somehow. not possible. I don't even know who she is, so I'm still not clear on how pinterest following and finding works. http://pinterest.com/pin/97812623126763259/
Let me know when it starts doing the laundry, taking my car to the shop and earning a living for me, among other things that don't seem to be getting done because I'm spending too much time on 365!!!! And I have to wait for an invite? Not happenin'.
I only just got an invite to join Pinterest a couple of days ago, but I think I'm going to really enjoy it. I think of it almost like a new way to handle bookmarking webpages. Rather than having a long list that you can't remember why you bookmarked, now it has a little picture and description, and it's categorized by whatever theme you want! It's also nice to see things that my friends/family have "pinned" and I'm finding new things to look at because of it. The problem is that between Pinterest and 35Project, there's just too much time I can waste now!
Hmmm Sue, Michelle, Rebecca, I'm in your camp however Ms Ashley Campbell's answer is just starting to make sense. I still think I need to sit down with my niece and have a visual lesson. I'm sure she is down with it.... then I need an invite.
Thank you all for your info. I'm going to check it out again and look at your links. I will try and follow some of you so u can get the gist of what's going on. I like the idea of bookmarking everything in one place.. Especially photo tutorials and tips.
@bobfoto once I work it out I will send you an invite ..
@michelleyoung Imagine a pinboard above your office desk with pictures of things you either have to or want to do at work or at home. Virtual version of that.
http://pinterest.com/amandathepanda/photography/ is my photography board. Some of you will notice your pics on there - pinned before I thought about asking to pin (they should all be referenced to your project and linked though). Hopefully you can click the link and get an idea....
Found this on their website, it may help. :)

also do you put any of your own pictures up?
Do you follow people? and if so do you pin some of their things to your board... sorry for all the questions!
