wanting to upgrade my nikon

Could use some help. I have a D3000, 2 years old. What do you think my next step up should be? Seeing some D5000's for around $500, is this a good camera? Should I not buy used and go with the new D5100 for around $950 (which I would need to save for) would that be a better move, or should I be looking at something else? And I would like to sell my current camera. I've seen prices from $250 up to $700 (which is silly, I think we paid around 600. Any idea where I can find out what its worth? Thanks for any insight :)

What is lacking in your current camera? I would think going to the D5000 isn't a huge difference, so I would go for the D5100 or a used D90 maybe. I'd say look at the specs on each camera and see what features you need. Video? A bigger LCD? More megapixels, or what?

We upgraded our D70 to a D7000 and its amazing :-) the sensor is fabulous but the new lens kit we got with it also gave a boost to the shots we get with our D70. I agree with above - what are you looking for?

I went from a Nikon D40x to a D90 and I just LOVE my D90 - it does all I need it to do, and more. My two cents anyway!

I have a 5100, it has the same image quality as the 7000. BH has the body for 589. All your lenses for your 3100 will work on it. The D7000 is an amazing camera and I wish I had one, but is twice as expensive. The 5100 should be easy to find on criagslist, ebay or in a local camera shop

I went from a D50 to a D90. While I agree the D90 is a better camera, my D50 is still good, and takes great shots. Looking at the end results, I would say the D90 was an improvement about 33% of time time.

I went from D3000 to D90, although if I could do it again I might go D7000 instead. If you're going used, @smapp's suggestion is a good one. :)

i have the d3000 as well....when i went to go buy it, i was torn between the 3000 and the 5000, so really, there's not much difference between them.....i'm currently considering the d90 or the d7000, but it's moot since i can't afford either one...
good luck!

D90. It has an internal focusing motor so it can autofocus non-AFS lenses like the 50mm's and the fisheye. Nikon didn't have the 35mm 1.8 afs when the d90 came out. Do any of the new cameras have a commander mode for wireless flashes as well? I haven't kept up with the tech since the 90's that great. Otherwise, there's no major reason to jump from the 40/60/3xxx/5xxx/7xxx to another in that family.

@mikew @saranna the main thing I am looking to improve is clarity in my photos. I've always struggled to get really sharp clear photos, and from what I've read, others struggle with this camera too. Thank you everyone for your input :) I'll widen my search :)

If it's clarity maybe consider getting your camera serviced and a new lens? Our camera guy told us that the problem cameras loose their edge is because of old lens and dirty sensors. Although the D7000 takes amazing photos without you having to do much I can still get nice crisp images with the D70 using the new lens it's just not as responsive so I work more with the manual settings and a tripod almost all the time and it works ... but I steal the D7000 whenever I can get my hands on it :-) good luck with your camera hunt
