Local Photo Scavenger Hunts

February 4th, 2012
Wednesday, I was on my media phone and just happened to see a post on my newsfeed on facebook about a locally sponsored Downtown Photo Scavenger Hunt. I got excited!
I didn't realize until I got to my computer that it was for THAT day and I had just a couple of hours to find the subjects, photograph them, load, organize and label them and send them in to the organizers. The first day, I had about 1 1/2 hours to do all of that! The next day (yesterday), I had about 4 1/2 hours to do it.

As soon as I read about it, the first day, I called my friend and got her to join me. She carries her camera with her everywhere and takes pic's of just about everything. It was fun! Fortunately, I was available during the day to do it. It was really interesting to see how different store employees and other such strangers reacted to our quest.

Well....I WON! I got the email notice today. The winning prize was $100 each day and an additional $100 for a one photo that was the best shot of "downtown."

Does your city or a town near you ever do this sort of thing? Have you ever participated? It was soooo much fun!

Joe
Congratulations!

I haven't heard of it before. But I've thought something like this could be a lot of fun. If anyone organizes one in the NYC Tri-state area, please let me know!

Very cool, especially for last minute. www.meetup.com is a good source to find photo clubs in your area. One of the group I've joined tried to do a scavenger hunt but very few people showed up and it was really cold so that idea was scrapped. Sounds like fun though.

That is so cool. I have never heard of one being held here but maybe I can see if I can work with some people to get one going

It was soooo much fun! I can't wait to do something like it again!

@dmortega -- Thanks for the reminder. Forgot about meeetup!

@jenp -- There was no ONE winning photo for the SH part. There were over 50 "items" to find and photograph. I don't think it was necessarily the quality of the photograph, but the challenge itself. Different ones had different points and if you were able to combine several "items" into one photo, you got extra points. Apparently the total number of points was the highest....it was fun to be creative! For example, I couldn't believe I couldn't find a guitar!! so I took a pic of a greeting card with a frog playing a guitar. :))
There was also (on the last day - unknown ahead of time) that there would be an additional prize for a ONE picture entry of the best photo of downtown. Here is the one I used: (not from the day of the contest.) I don't even know where or if they are going to post the winning photos.

"Congress Street Light Show"
The city keeps it's colorful lights up all winter and bit by bit turns various lights off until they are all not lit. Although, see the string of lights toward the right? They were more multi before. Last night, they were blue and white! The light to the top left is iconic for the downtown area; it is the "time and temp" building. It currently says, "GO" then "PATS" then the current time and then current temperature.
