White Balance

February 5th, 2012
Hi all,

Once again looking to my lovely fellow 365ers for help!

Just wondered if anyone knows how you can check what white balance was used to take a photo post-shoot? I'm doing a photography course and have lots of examples of incorrect and correct settings but I can't remember what settings I used at the time (that's how behind and disorganised I am!).

If you can find out the settings originally used, that would be a great help.
In Picasa it only says 'manual' rather than 'tungsten' etc.

Thanks,
Laura

Can you view the exif info? I can see mine by navigating to the file in question and hovering the mouse over it, or by opening it in lightroom or Photoshop.

I don't use any other programmes but there are various other methods out there too.

Way way back in the olden days of film photography, people would carry a small notebook around to record their camera settings while shooting images. That can still be very useful today.
However, as Peter says, view the EXIF data to see what white balance setting you used in whatever photo editing software you use. Most cameras also have a feature where you can view EXIF data on the camera's screen right after the pic is taken. Check your camera's manual for info on if it can be done, and how to do it. Your photos here on 365 don't show what camera you use, and the EXIF data on your pics here is very minimal as if it has been stripped away by whatever editing software you are using.
Hopefully you still have the original images somewhere with all their EXIF data still intact so you can find the WB settings you used.

Open the image in Picasa, and right click over the image, then select Properties at the bottom, it should then give you the EXIF info including the WB settings.
