Bridge Cameras

I'm pretty new to photography and am plodding on with a little Fujifilm Finepix S4000 which my fella bought me for Christmas.

He got me a bridge camera so I could prove I'd use it.

I'm pretty happy with it actually, and think my pictures are coming out pretty well considering I'm not all singing and dancing, and have barely taken anything other than photos on my phone before.

Is anyone else using bridge cameras so I can take a nosey at your stuff?

I use a Nikon Coolpix L120 which was advertised as a "Bridge". But while like other bridge cameras it is the general shape of a small DSLR, it features very little manual control other than white balance and ISO but does pack decent zoom.

Yeah mine has the options of manual settings, but few options within the options...such as I can change to ISO priority but only have a few ISO options. I think this kinda thing is OK while I'm still learning, but a bit more flexibility might be nice in future.

regardless, it's still a pretty good cam (i think, not that I know much better!)

I had a panasonic Lumix Bridge which I had for a few years before going DSLR. I gave it to my friend. It's still a really good camera. And as much as it had a load of manual settings I couldn't quite do what I can do now with my DSLR. I'd still highly recommend it though.

I have a FinePix s1800 and it does more than I know what to do with it. So, I am learning to use it before I make the next step to a DSLR...when I save up my coins.

I do have a question..not sure where to ask. I read about all the different lens, i.e 50mm etc. Just what kind of lens is on the FinePix s1800? It reads: 18x OPTICAL f=5.0-90.0mm 1:3.1-5.6 What exactly does this mean?

I get that it is 18x Optical zoom But I don't understand the other.
Thanks to anyone that can help me understand what I have.
