External card reader chipped my card

February 17th, 2012
So I've done it. I was using my external card reader for uploading images.
This kind: http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-ImageMate-Memory-Reader-SDDR-89-A15/dp/B00064V6RG/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1329439245&sr=1-2
And I ruined my card.
It was never very easy to insert the card in an appropriate slot on the reader and today when I stuck it in it would not read the card. When I took my card out I could feel with my fingers that corner or the card is chipped. Card is pretty much unusable unless somebody knows some tricks.
I'd like to know what is the safest way to handle downloading pictures from the memory card.
Taking card out from the camera and sticking it in a card reader slot every day ( That's was I've been doing ) doesn't seem like very safe. Thanks. Bardejov

I don't really know much about this, but I just plug a USB cable directly into my camera and then it downloads to my camera. I never remove my memory card.

@bardejovI was using a ubs cable to download my pictures and the part of the camera that you insert the cable is broken now. I think for inserting it in every day. So now I'm using card and wondering how long it will last. I was wondering what everyone does that doesn't wear out the camera or the card?

I never take mine out, use the USB cable.

I use card readers, anywhere up to a dozen times each day (sometimes more). Always have. Never had a problem.

If you use the direct cable approach, make sure your camera battery isn't running low - if it dies while you are transferring images, you can lose them.

i chipped a 8GB Kingston SD card (paid $30) in a $5 USB card adapter ... kinda of sad, but you move on things change, new opportunities come along, I just try to be careful and insert and remove with caution.

I use a card everyday, I have read in a discussion about this kind of thing. It is important to have a good quality card as you get what you pay for. Someone in the previous link said he lost all his images because his card split into 2.

Thank you all for taking time and responding to my problem. It was an eye opener since I didn't know those things could happen. Reading your responses and other links helped me a lot. Thanks.
