Venting - Lens death

I have an older Tamron multi-purpose lens, the 28 - 300 mm telephoto zoom. It was a good all around lens, but I've had two bad experiences. On my once-in-a-lifetime trip to Paris, the zoom function fell apart on my second day there forcing zoom by hand sliding the lens barrel the rest of the trip. Sent it to Tamron for repair and have used it since then until last weekend - at an exhibit of spring flowers, I could actually hear the autofocus mechanism blow up. SIGH, too much money spent now to warrant another repair. . . do any of you have other disastrous lens stories?

@lyno OUCH! Bad time to lose a lens! Please please please tell me you at least had another lens in paris? Out of curiosity how heavy is that lens? I hired the canon 28-300 and that thing was a beast!

Oh oh! I 've had that same lens for 3 years+ and use it all the time. The only problem I've been having is that the AF/MF button is very sticky....no disasters yet, though.

@neda @vskolnik Neda, yes - several others so I wasn't as distraught as I would have been otherwise! Vee, as I said, it was a good lens for quite some time, but maybe it's the old adage of getting what you pay for...no problems with my Canon lenses!
