G11 vs New lens

February 27th, 2012
I have two questions and need opinions! I want to buy a wide angle lens…but can’t really afford it right now. I have a Powershot G11 which is what I used before I got my DSLR, but now only use my T3i (and love it so much!!!). Granted, I’ve only had the camera for less than two months, but I doubt I will get tired of lugging it around. Part of me wants to keep both cameras, but another part of me feels like I will never really use the G11 again (I know this because I went to the g11 from a canon elph and I never used the elph again…might sell that one too!! But it is so old Lol)…SO I am considering selling it and use the money towards a wide angle lens.

So my questions are…which wide angle lens do you recommend at around the $600-$700 price and would you give up a Powershot G11 to get money for a lens??

I’m so indecisive!!!!

Having a camera with you when you want and need it is more important than having an extra lens. If you have a 8 MP smart phone camera, which tends to be always with a person, then you probably will never use the powershot again. I use the EF 24-105 all the time and it is most commonly on the 24mm because I do a lot of hdr landscapes. So it depends a lot on what you mostly photograph and if you have a compact phone camera that is always with you.

I have an iphone 4s that is always with me...so i do have backup in case i dont have my t3i. I dont have one specific thing/style i photograph. I take tons of poctures of my kids and random things outdoors...i just want to have a basic set of lenses for options.

What i have is:

18-55mm kit lens
55-250mm f/4-5.6

The Tokina 12-24 f4 is a superb lens for the price. Also, what Don said about the iPhone. I only use my G10 underwater these days :)

@dieter I have an unhealthy fear if the ocean....i swim but I get full blown anxiety thinking about what could be swimmig by me. Jealous because i imagine it must be beautiful to scuba dive.

Canon 17-40L 4.0 is an absolutely brilliant lens. Just a hair more than the range you gave.

Forced to an either/or I would give up my G12 for the 17-40. But I would be sad.

@jreyna it can be beautiful indeed :) though if I'm not taking pictures I prefer to just slip on fins, mask and snorkel rather than weighing myself down with all the gear!

I also use my G10 for underwater shoots now. I got the housing for it, so now to part with the camera seems silly, even though I hardly ever use it. If you carry your phone anyways and would use that if you don't have your big guns with you or don't want to bring it (out for the evening for ex.) then I say sell the G11 and get the lens you really want. I just bought a 16-85 VR lens and am almost giddy it is so wonderful. I also have a 10-24 which is pretty fun for landscapes, but it does distort people. Good luck with your decision!!

I used to have a G7 before I drowned it when the housing leaked (very sad day but I got some nice shots of a whale shark first!!) - but it was great for underwater shots. Now I've got a DSLR the only reason I'd look at replacing my G7 with the latest version would be for underwater shots.

Wow, lots of underwater G people here! I made my decision...i will be going for the lens. I will get more out of it. No point in keeping a camera collecting dust!
