What's The Best Lens?

July 8th, 2010
What's the best lens that's 55mm< that'll work for a Nikon D3000? It has to be cheaper than $200 (new) (and trust me, there are ones like that that's cheaper than $200 :P) I just want to know which one will work...

What are you using it for?

There's not a lot in that price range for lenses longer than 55mm.

The best I can tell, here's your options.
Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G DX AFS @ $175
Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 LD @ $165
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG @ $160

There are a few others, but these are the ones that will focus with a D3000. My guess is the Nikkor will be the best quality out of those 3, but I've never seen any direct comparisons.

Honestly, save some money and do it right, there are places to cut money, tele lenses are not the places to cut corners. Nikon Makes some of the best tele lenses available and when you get into ED glass you will know what I'm talking about.

Out of the ones posted above go with the Nikon 55-200 over the Tamron and Sigma... not a great lens but worlds better then the other two.

Exactly, I agree with Travis, don't waste your money on cheap lenses. Save up for the more expensive ones and you wont be sorry. It will take longer before you get a lens but the quality is well worth the wait.

50mm f/1.8. you might be able to get them for less than a 100. not sure if this will autofocus on a D3000 though.

I'd say save too, lenses are more important than camera's I think..

Freida, I couldn't agree more, I got the Nikon D90 after having the D60... shot with the kit lens on both and noticed very little change in my photos if any. In higher ISO I could see the most difference but that is about it. It wasn't until I got my 50mm 1.8 that I realized what a nice lens can do for your photos, ever since I'm addicted to glass. After that I got the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 (anyone that wants a superwide for a fraction of the money this is a AWESOME lens) and this just made me go wild! I don't EVER want to use my kit lens ever again. The 18-105mm is a good all in one lens for travel but doesn't produce the images I'm use to now with my higher class lenses. I was fortunate enough to get a steal on a 80-200mm f/2.8 lens this last month so I'm speaking from experience when I say go with ED glass.... you will not regret it one bit!

The only lens worth having in that price range (that will autofocus on a D3000) is the Nikon 35mm f/1.8. It's sharp as a tack and will become your go-to lens. I use it much more often that my two $800+ lenses... Seriously you will never look back, go order it.

I can't pay for a lens over $200... I'm only 13... I've been saving for the camera for about 6 weeks and I'm still not even close so there's no way I can set a higher limit. But thanks guys :)

Bless she's only a little teen, and you guys are suggesting that she buys a lens for hundreds of dollars! Ashley, you go buy the lens that you can afford. I agree that a prime lens (one with a fixed distance) is the best bet; it's a good compromise between image quality and price.
