External flash on a budget

March 4th, 2012
I've been confined to the house for a few days no thanks to a tooth infection... and I'm finding it very hard to find creative things to photograph with my current equipment.

I'd like to buy an external flash, preferably for almost zero dollars! I want to be able to take it completely off the camera so I guess I'm looking for something that can work in slave mode off my tiny on-camera flash?

I'm using a Panasonic GF1 which has a hotshoe but i believe doesn't support Canon TTL (only Olympus and Panasonic), if TTL is actually important?

Any suggestions welcome!!!

Here you go.

It's not for zero bones, but it's great quality at a decent price. Just tested it too, and it syncs perfectly with the on-camera flash (Canon 500D). I use this puppy more than my Canon speedlites, and I really wish I had a few more of them.

There's another brand called Yongnou that apparently has some really cheap flashes apparently of decent quality, but I can't vouch for them as I never used them personally. By the looks of it, you can get them on ebay for $30 to $80.

Good luck.

I got a youngnuo yn560 speedlite off amazon last week for about £40 and so far i'm very happy with it.

@charlescellist @emmar84 I second the YN560. Cheap and POWERFUL. Take a look at my 365 project, almost all of my pictures use at least 1 yn560

Vivitar 285 and a youngnuo trigger. with the 285 you have LOTS of options now and later both. I have not tried the youngnuo flash, but the remotes are nice, and modular

I buy fairly cheap and robust units from Cowboy Studio through
Amazon.

I personally have 4 of these ... with the wireless remotes ... and they work really well.

They have different units for different prices.
