I am looking for a good point and shoot camera that I can take with me on vacation. We are going on a cruise and i would love to have a camera that i can have in my pocket while out on excursions. I want something that will slip into a small shoulder bag but takes good pictures. Well as good as the person behind the camera can do. Haha.
Hi Ann. My favourite camera for point and shoot is my Panasonic Lumix. It is freeze proof, water proof (yep it goes under water no case required), shock proof, drop proof and dust proof. I took it on a 3 week hike to Everest Base Camp last year and it never missed a beat. It also takes great photos and video. It is also small and I carry it in my handbag all the time as my 'in case I see something' camera. It's worth considering.
Canon SX220 or SX230 (with GPS). You can shot it in full auto, program mode (Scenes), aperture or shutter priority or full manual. Lens reach is from 28mm to almost 400mm and IQ is quite good.
I have a couple of point and shoots, but the one I bought for the same thing as you need was the Fuji XP. Like the one mentioned above it,s waterproof, dust proof, shockproof, in fact anything proof. Takes a nice photo as well.. :-) ?. And will fit in any pocket or handbag..
Canon G12....slightly larger than the tiny compact ones - but still fits in a large pocket or small shoulder bag. I travel and hike a lot - highly recommend it. It has all the bells and whistles in a small size and takes fab fab pictures!
The Lumix TZ would be my first choice, too. I love mine, it takes fantastic macros, has an amazing zoom and some extras like long or short exposures and some choice in depth of field. If you want some examples of what it can do, you can look at my pictures, most of which are taken with my trusted point and shoot.
I take this on mountain bike rides and hikes. Not sure it is water proof, haven't tested it out but I am impressed every time I use it the brilliant colors I get.
Love my Canon SD1200 (I think they are up to the SD1400 now). It's super slim, produces great images and you can buy an undwerwater case for it if you want to take it to the beach and in the water, snorkeling and diving.
I shot my entire 365 year with my Canon PowerShot SX120 IS. I love it - super versatile (check out my shots, if you want to see a range)....yet SUPER easy to use. Have fun on your trip!
I'm amazed at some of the shots I get from my little old Canon Ixus 75, my only camera. I'm sure it's been updated since I had it x years ago, but I'll be thinking of replacing it with another little Canon when it wears out. It's pictured left!
Definitely the Lumix ZS10. Fabulous zoom and many other great features. You can use it in autofocus or other settings, etc, etc. Most of my 365 is shot using the Lumix. It also does well in low light. Here is one where I used the 16x zoom:

P.S. I am not a very good photographer but with this camera even my mediocrity comes out half decent.
I use a simple Kodak EasyShare M550.... It does everything I want it to do, including getting close ups of the moon AND getting detailed images of the moon from a distance along with Mars... that and it takes magnificent scenery shots as well as light shots... any shot actually. You don't need expensive. My camera was about $150. Really cheap. It has tons of manual and preset settings if you need them. Or you could just let it figure it out itself.
I think a Canon PowerShot A2200. Would be absolutely great as just a little travel camera, and then would go on to serve as an excellent starter if you or someone else decide to get more involved with the art. Canon always has the highest quality in my opinion. Nikons are okay, but no matter what model or white balance I used on one, I always, always had this weird yellow tone that was just annoying.
But since you're going on a cruise, I would also recommend a Canon PowerShot D10. It has a lot of the same specs as the A2200, but it's a little pricier. It's waterproof, though, and I believe for a cruise, that's something you most definitely want to take into account. It's small, too, not too much bulkier, and with either model, you still have much more manual control than you would over most other brand point and shoots (ISO, aperture, and shutter speed control, for example). :)
