So I have been talking with Michael, Chris, Melissa and Trina about venturing a bit north and spending Saturday, May 12th in Manhattan. I love these peoples photos and words and ideas and cannot wait to meet them. I was planning on taking the train into New York and spending a full day there.
If anyone is interested in meeting up with us chime in here on the discussion and list any must sees for you. I tasked Michael with the task of getting ramen on the lower east side (in case Chris is not able to join us due to family obligations).
@brumbe@chriswang@melissapike@5unflow3r - You guys should let me know if youhave any "must see" places. Since I comb this City on a day/nightly basis, I can put together a photo itinerary that logistically makes sense so we can cover things efficiently and have fun without losing our minds.
@brumbe@chriswang -- this place Totto is excellent. I pass it every day and its packed with a line down the sidewalk from 12noon until 2pm. Perhaps not as crazed on weekends:
@michaelelliott@chriswang this soooooo works for me. I even called and they have a seafood/fish free broth (yes I have a nasty food allergy). I think because New York is close and I have been there before I have no absolute Must Sees because I can always come back.

I am so excited for the 12th. The next 8 days cannot pass quick enough. Also the good news is that as long as you do not laugh at my nikes I should be great to walk around the city. Do we want to set up a meeting time and place. I will be coming in from Secaucus Junction and they seem to have a train coming into Penn Station about every 20 minutes on a Saturday so time is not a huge constraint for me (unless I hit turnpike traffic). And yes, I will get there early to have a bagel also because there really is a difference.
Michael, I know Howard and Joe are in the NY area, but they did not reply to the conversation.
@brumbe@jreyna@michaelelliott@chriswang@5unflow3r - Since some come in via Grand Central and others from Penn Station, I good in between place is Bryant Park at 42nd St and 6th Ave. (Praying for good weather). Bryant Park is a cool place too to take shots. Some other "hot" spots are Central Park from the front by the pond to Bethesda Plaza. And for sure downtown Wall St area to Battery Park. Some other great sopts - ride the Tram to Roosevelt Island - amazing skyline shots and of course my fav - over the Brooklyn Bridge to the Promenade and Park on that side. I guess I'm getting carried away but defintiely be prepared for walking and subways (you'll need metrocard).
It will be SO amazing to meet everyone!! I think my flight will land at 2ish at la guardia....my best friend lives in brooklyn.... First time in new york so j dont really know what a that means for distances. We might go to timesquare for dinner and then bar hoppin in brooklyn? Plans still up in the air a bit.
@jreyna - In Manhattan everything is fairly close 15 mins here and there and subways are fast. Brooklyn depends upon where. My fav spot between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges is very close to Manhattan. Times Sq is in middle of everything - I work there.
What time are we planning on meeting? Last time I went, we left from New Haven and got there by 9am. If it's in this thread anywhere, I apologize . :-)
@jreyna@aspada@chriswang@5unflow3r@melissapike@brumbe@luvthyclassics -- Up to you guys. Are we thinking morning into afternoon, or afternoon into early evening? Lots to cover so dress comfortable for adventure. If igure since some coming in via Grand Central and some via Penn Station - Bryant Park at 42nd St and 6th Ave in the middle to meet. Good news weather is forecast to be high 60s and partly sunny.
I would prefer morning to afternoon but I will defer to Paula since she is making the hike up from Philly. I probably need to be leaving the city around 4pm.
@chriswang@5unflow3r@brumbe@jreyna@melissapike -- Paulas what time do your trains get in? Is meet up at 10am (or is 11 better) by the fountain in Bryant Park at 41st and 6th Ave doable? We can grab coffee there and sit and chat to get acquainted (though I feel I already know you all) and then we can plot out our course for the day logistically.
@chriswang@brumbe@jreyna@melissapike@michaelelliott I hadn't even looked at the schedule yet....I figured I would work that out once a time was set. I'll be coming out of New Haven and I think they have a train every hour or so to Grand Central. So since Paula B has the longest commute, it probably makes sense to let her decide. Mid morning, like I had sugested, may actually be too early for her. I don't want her to have to catch a train in the middle of the night. LOL I'm flexible. :-)
@5unflow3r - that's what I was thinking probably 11am meet up works best but let's wait for @brumbe to jump in here. I'm so psyched that the weather is supposed to be nice.
@michaelelliott I'm nervous/excited. Should be fun, I just hope that I find you guys! LOL I've only been to NYC twice. Can we squeeze that Warhol statue into the itinerary? Sooo shiny. :-)
We should probably exchange cell phone numbers? Texting might be a useful tool...
@5unflow3r - I guess we can leave on old photos and then delete. I now have a photo itinerary worked out that logistically makes sense to cover same great areas and use our time wisely. (I'm sure we can stick in Warhol). Just need to hear from brumbe on meet up time. As for the Fountain at Bryant Park - you can't miss it! When you get out of GCS walk west along 42nd St a few blocks and you will see the Park at 5th Ave and 42nd - just cut through it over to the fountain on other side.
Okay, the NJ Transit train comes in from Jersey at 9:33, 9:39, 9:46, 9:53, 10:35, 10:37, 10:39, 10:41 and 10:53. The last time we drove it took just under two hours to leave my house, wait for Ed, get coffee, stop for the bathroom and Ed to smoke and get a Roy Rogers burger, park, walk to the station and take the train. So pretty much I am flexible on meeting time. I may aim for the 9:33 train and anticipate getting the 9:53 train if there is traffic. @5unflow3r@michaelelliott@chriswang
@chriswang@brumbe@jreyna@michaelelliott@5unflow3r Sounds good to me! There is a very small chance I may have to drop out last-minute. My band has a show the night before and my parents were tossing around the idea of coming down to the city for it. I doubt they'll be able to make it, but I should know by tomorrow night.
@chriswang@brumbe@jreyna@melissapike@michaelelliott@5unflow3r -- Ok so lets all meet between 10-10:30am at the fountain in Bryant Park which is at 6th Ave and 41st St (easy walking distance bet GCS and Penn). There are lots of chairs all over the place and coffee so good spot to gather up.
I have an efficient photo itinerary plan mapped out that will give us some fabulous shots from different areas with lots of diversity, but of course we can change things on the fly as you all desire. With nice waether forecast this should be great!
@jreyna -LaG is about a 30 min taxi ride from Queens into the City. If you can;t meet at Bryant Park to start out, just let us know when you can make it and we'll let you know where we are at that time - as we will be on the move alot.
@chriswang@brumbe@michaelelliott@5unflow3r Ok, so I am definitely in... my family can't make it down after all, which is what I suspected. You won't be able to miss me.... I just dyed my hair a really bright pinkish red. ;-) Can't wait to see you all!
@brumbe - if you wish but yes could lend the day in there especially B&H. But I wonder if that's closed Saturdays because it's operated by Sat Sabbath observers.
turns out Ippudo is now in midtown and lower east side
Yes Ippudo recently opened a new location in midtown. This photo is from the downtown location.
