Macro Photograpy.... maybe

April 23rd, 2012
I am in the market for a new camera and have pretty much decided on the Nikon D7000. I think. It seems to be what has been recommended by a few people...including the guy at Nikon when I was asking about replacing my D200 with the D300s. I have two lenses now that I use on my D200 - 35 -120 mm and 80 - 400 mm. The D7000 comes in a kit with an 18 - 55 mm lens. It has a macro setting on the camera and I was thinking I might get into some macro photography. I wondered if I should purchase a macro lens or if I could use the macro filters that you can attach to your lens. Another option would be to purchase the Nikon AW100 and have a smaller camera that can do most things including underwater photography as well as macro. I do not want to rush into my purchase so am looking at all the options for the extras that I am going to purchase. As I really enjoy nature and the great outdoors I was also wondering if a teleconverter would be of use for my 80-400mm lens to extend it a little. Do these really work or would I be better to put the money into another lens? So many questions and so much to choose from. It's had to decide :)

Thanks for your help and suggestions
Happy shooting :)

If you can swing a macro lens, go for it!

But if you want to try it out first, definitely get some of the close up filters / macro filters. They are SOOOO cheap and I LOVE them!

Take a look at my project and you'll see a lot of "Macro" with my filters. It's fun! I'm getting a macro soon.

@jenp Thanks Jennifer. I saw the strawberry and that was enough to have me looking at the filters to give it a try :)

Right now I use a Nikon D90 and I have two macro lenses. The first one I bought because it was a really good price was the 85mm. Then I bought the 40mm. My dream macro is the 105mm and at some point I'll upgrade to that one. I wanted to make sure I enjoyed taking macro shots. I enjoy using them both and I've been happy with the shots. Of all the things I take photos of, I enjoy the macro shots of bugs and things outside the most.

Here is a shot with the 40mm lens:

Here is a shot with the 85mm lens:

There are a bunch of other shots using this lens in my "October 2011 Month" because that's when I got the lens.

Hi there I have both the D7000 and the 105mm Macro lens and the best advice I can give is buy the body only and purchase the 50mm F1.4 and save for the macro lens. I bought the D7000 with the 16-85 lens and then bought the 50mm and have rarely used the 16-85mm. I then rented the 105mm for a weekend and within 10 minutes had decided to buy it and love it. It is a very heavy lens but the results for both macro and portrait work are superb. Hope this helps and if you have any other questions then please just ask.

Best wishes

If you have the money, go with the macro lens over the filters. The difference on my camera is noticeable in the distance to the object I can get. I also adore my wide angle for the opposite reasons.

Thank you all in your help with my decision. Now I guess I am shopping for the best price I can get for everything. Have any of you ever used a teleconverter? I was wondering about one of those with the package as well. It would be nice to extend my 80-400 mm lens.... if the teleconverter works.

@k1w1 If you live in the U.S. check out www.borrowlenses.com I rented about four lenses and a tripod/tripod head. I saved a fair amount of money by not buying two of the lenses or purchasing the teleconverter to go with my kit lens. I think I would have needed a better lens for it to work really well.

@Christine
Always buy prime lenses if you can as they picture quality is so worth the money

@andysg Thanks Andy. I have been reading some reviews and looking at best deals etc. I will probably stick with a Nikon lens but just have to decide if I am going to go with the one that comes with the kit or purchase body only and get a good macro lens. Too many decisions. I wish someone would just buy it for me and say here you go.... maybe pay for it too :)
