I often noticed that photo's posted to 365 do not look anywhere near as sharp and detailed as on other websites. Its not just my pics - the difference between the same photo posted on here by those that also have a link to the same pic on Flickr is quite significant. Is there any way the quality of the photo can be improved? I don't want to appear as a moaner but its a shame that photo's do not appear to be at their best on here.
I personally like it, as larger files take more bandwith than I've got to spare.
This is a real issue in countries like South Africa--if the files were larger I wouldn't be able to look at anybody else's pics, so I really hope that there aren't any changes made in this regard!
I don't think it is too do with size of files as i regularly post to other websites pics of less than 200kb and of a 1000 x 720 max size and these do not lose their quality. Also there are quite a few people on here who do not alter their sizes for the web and upload over 1mb.
Just to address one point of yours Cindy, it doesn't matter what size file you upload, it's always resampled down to a 550xwhatever (on the longest edge), so Becky's concern about bandwidth is relevant here.
On the strange side, though, I just compared my "look but don't drink" image on the site with the "real" source jpg. The one on the site (resampled) is 38KB, the real one is 109KB, yet somehow the one on the site manages to be way sharper.
So if anything it seems the site is making things sharper, not less sharp. Do you have an example where it's less sharp here?
Ok here is an example: See below on 365
and same size on another website:
http://www.tog247.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=7340&ppuser=19 ( I cant paste the link for some reason as it keeps reverting back to this site)
Also your point re pics being resized automatically is not true if you look at this one http://365project.org/cafict/365/2010-05-27 So not sure I understand what is causing the quality difference in terms of sharpness.
I don't know if it just my computer, but I pasted the link and could not see any significant difference in the quality of the photos. I have been happy with the way my images look on 365.
Cindy, I compared closely both photos and only noticed a slight difference. I stared at the fly's wings, legs, etc. and at the flower along with its textures. I wasn't able to see any real discrepancy except the brightness of the yellow petal. The other site seemed a tad brighter in this area. Could it be the margin tone (a cool white here and a warmer tan there) is affecting it? Is this what you see? Or is it something more?
It's a great shot and the difference seems negligible to me. Just my opinion. Hope this helps.
