Opteka RL-600 ETTL 11 Ring Lite flash

I've just bought a 100mm macro lens for my canon 450D. I'm already finding depth of field a struggle without a flash. At present I only have the cameras pop up to work with although I have been experimenting with DIY diffusers. I can't afford a proper Canon ring lite but I have seen a cheap Opteka version & wondered if anyone else had tried this. What flashes do most of you 365ers use for you macro work? Especially when photographing insects?
