External card reader for tablets?

April 27th, 2012
I do not have an iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab (yet!)... and am searching for an external card reader for the tablet I DO have... a LePan TC970 tablet.

I purchased this tab as a cheap alternative to the name brand tablets, to use on vacations. I was tired of dragging my laptop around... but didn't want to spend 500+ on something I wasn't sure I would use much.

Well it turns out that I DO use it quite a bit, and am saving up to buy myself the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 for Christmas. :)

In the meantime... I would love a way to get photos from my camera to my tablet, so I don't have to take both the tablet and either a laptop or my netbook with me when I travel.

The LePan has a 30 pin connector... I see from my extensive (5 minute) Google research that Apple and Samsung products also use a 30 pin connector... BUT are they universal? Or are they configured in a way that they can only be used with Apple or Samsung products?

Any information any of you may have on this will be greatly appreciated.

From my 10 minute google search it appears that 30 pin connectors are pretty universal....I'm sure the Apple ones are somehow different than the others....here is a google list of 30pin SD card readers, I'm assuming you are using an SD card...

My quick search turned up the fact the it has a micro sd slot. This is something I'd suggest. I use this so I can put the micro sd card to upload pics if I need to.

I put the micro sd card "into my phone" to upload pics. Missed that bit out.

Thanks for the help... I found a couple myself, but only available for shipping. I was hoping to find something local because I have a trip planned next week.

I really hate to pay more for shipping than the actual item I am purchasing.

I guess I'll have ONE more vacation dragging around multiple computers...

I don't know why they can't just put a card reader (SD not micro) on a tablet... don't they know people want to transfer photos and stuff?

You can buy a micro sd card that comes in a regular sd card for use in the camera and then pull it out and use the micro sd in the tablet. Best Buy, Staples, ... all carry them.

Yeah... I might have to do that for this trip. But (like on a phone) the microSD card slot is kinda tricky to get to on my tablet.

At least now I know what my first accessory will be when I get the new tablet in December... :)

Update: That didn't work... I tried several file manager programs and none of them allow me to access the internal memory of the tablet or create a directory there.

And now that I've had time to think about it, there isn't that much internal memory on my current tablet anyway. Which is probably why it's not set up for me to have access to it. I'm sure the operating system is using up most of that space.

So for now, I have enough memory cards to just keep the photos on them until I am back from my trip. And the new tablet I'm getting in December has plenty of internal storage space (and external too) so I know I'll be able to do what I want to do with that one.

Thanks again for your help.
