Portrait advice

I am going to be taking some photos for my brother in law, with his new baby (about 3 weeks old?). I have some props, cuddly towels, flowers, baskets, and both a white and black backdrop and spare material. I have also looked at other photos, and picked a few I want to try to recreate.

I need advice on where to have the photo shoot. I only have a point and shoot, and have been having difficulty with it lately, with lighting. My house has quite a lot of natural light, which seems to work to my advantage when taking photos, although I find indoor photos the hardest. I have 1 lamp, although when I was using it last night to try and take photos, most of them turned out redish!

I want to try and make it as easy as possible for the baby and brother and sister inlaw, so not sure whether I should take a gamble and go to their house (never shot photos there before), and hope for the best, or ask them to come here, and still hope for the best!

Any ideas on lighting etc?!

The problem with a lamp is that, as you found out, it has a different colour than natural light. This will give the photo a colour cast unless the lamp can overpower the other light in the image.

I would suggest going for all natural light. Move right next to a window, or go outside and find a spot without direct sunlight. Morning, afternoon and overcast days are a good start.

I would suggest getting them over AND going over there. The more photos you take, the more likely you are to find one you like, particularly if you are trying new things.

Thanks for that advice Pat. We have an undercover outside area, with lots of natural light, so if I can't get the shots I want inside, we could always move out there.

take advantage of the natural light in your home. i especially love the light in the morning, the angle of the light adds depth to the photos :)

If you're struggling with finding enough natural light, get a daylight lamp. You can pick them up in most craft shops.

for me, lighting is key, and play around with lots of angles! and enjoy it!
i used bedside table lights for ages before i borrowed some proper studio ones, it also actually helped me become better at understanding photography, so see it as benefitting your work for the long run :-) hope it goes well.
