Question?

I've been looking at bundles like this and similar ones. However, this one comes with various things including the Tamron 70-300mm Zoom Lens. I have two questions about this:

What does this lens do? (sorry, new to DSLRs!)
Is this a decent lens or would it be better to buy a better one separately at a later date.

I know some of the other stuff in the bundle is pointless (such as the tripod - I'm going to get a better one) but I've seen a bundle with just the camera and two lens which I've been looking into (can't find a link!)

Thanks!

It is a zoom lens, meaning you can be further away from the subject (s) and still get fairly close up...this one looks like it has a "macro switch" that helps the focusing when you are shooting close up, never heard of that so I can't comment on the feasbility or usefulness...It is an F4/5.6 though so when you are completely zoomed in you will be gathering less light...not a huge issue but for macros and zoom shots you will need more light than with a more expensive prime lens (one reason why they are more expensive!) Just something to be aware of . My 70-210 has a f6.3 aperture when it is all the way zoomed in...just makes me slow the shutter speed or up the ISO if that doesn't work.

Tamron isn't a bad brand and if you really like it, you won't be out when you go to buy another more expensive lens and leave this one in the bag or try to sell it. It's great that they are including a lens like that in the package for ya, don't find that all the time.

I have that lens, and I really like it. I prefer it to the Canon 55-250 that I had beforehand!
For a first zoom lens it will do you just fine, the macro setting is good as well.

Taken on the macro setting....

@minxymissk What is the macro like compared to the basic macro on the camera, I assume it is an improvement but it is the macro feature that appeals to me so is there point in going for this or just buying a macro lens?
@shadesofgrey @minxymissk Thank you both for your help!

@sobefree If you can afford a proper macro lens, go for it. I don't have one, but I'm happy with the shots I get from this lens (for now).

If you're just starting out with a DSLR it might be better for you to get general lenses whilst you decide what lenses you need.

A DSLR won't have a macro mode as such, you have to use a suitable lens.
